For over the past year, I have been plagued with several problems. My
urologist says I have prostatitis, but I was curious whether anyone thinks I
may have something else. My symptoms are:

1) at times, my testicles become slightly discolored (redish / darkish)and
tend to tighten up, especially after ejaculations and bowl movements.

2) it has become very difficult for me to achieve an erection and i frequently
prematurely ejaculate during sex(these were never previously problems). I am
however able to achieve a firm erection when i sleep.

3) occasionally after sex, i feel pain in my testicles.

I consulted two physicians and they said that my problems were probably
stress related. Then, I decided to see a urologist and he determined that i
have prostatitis. He has put me on the Cipro, Saw Palmetto, bland diet, warm
bath, frequent masterbation treatment. I have been on the treatment for a
month, but I have yet to notice any difference. My libido has withered away
to nothing and it is really depressing. I am starting to wonder whether I may
have some other problems with my testicles and would like to know if others
have problems similar to mine.

You're not clear about when your libido withered away.
Was it before or since starting Saw Palmetto? It turns
out that Saw Palmetto is an alpha-5 reductase inhibitor,
as are Proscar/Propecia (they are the same drug). The
writeup of Proscar at www.rxlist.com reveals reduced
libido as a side effect for some small percentage of
men (3-4% as I recall). So if your libido tanked after
starting Saw Palmetto, you might want to stop taking
it and see if you rebound. Also, once your course of
Cipro is done, start taking some Quercetin (I take
500mg in the morning, and 500mg in the evening).
The Quercetin will help keep the inflammation in check.

Also, don't be ashamed of the sexual dysfunction aspect
of prostatitis. I've got some dysfunction from it
myself. I've also noticed, as strange as this sounds,
that taking Viagra seems to alleviate the inflammation
from my prostatitis. The added bonus for you is that
Viagra makes a lot of men anorgasmic (I have problems
at 50mg and higher), so this will not only solve the
erection problem, but should help the premature ejaculation
problem for you as well. Ask your urologist for it -
do NOT suffer needlessly!!!

Good luck,

Drew

Thanks Drew,

Actually, my libido has been slipping away for the past year well before I
started taking Saw Palmetto. I think you may be right about the Saw Palmetto
though, because it seems to be making my sex drive situation even worse.
Anyway, Viagra seems like a possible alternative. Is it common to have
prostatitis and its associated symptoms for over a year straight? Can
permanant damage occur because I didn't get treatment sooner?

Thanks again

Prostatis can impact libido, see the UW symptom score 19 at:

It can for some men. Just be aware of the possibility.

There are men in this forum who have had prostatitis for
decades. As for the Viagra, I cannot stress this enough:
do not be ashamed of yourself. The pain you're getting
with prostatitis is bad enough. Don't suffer the agony
of sexual dysfunction in silence when Viagra will easily
solve that part of your problem. There is no shame in
needing Viagra.

> permanant damage occur because I didn't get treatment sooner?

I don't know the answer to this to be honest. Statistically,
you probably have non-bacterial prostatitis, so I'd doubt
any permanent damage has been done. But I'm not your
doctor, nor am I an MD at all.

I`ve achieved some improvment by using quercetin, yohimbe and zinc. I`ve also
been trying kai kit wan pills recently which seem to help a bit.

See my post in this thread. Insofar as Saw Palmetto acts
as Proscar, lowered libido is a possibility.

I think, as with all herbals, there is a brand strength. I have been taking
Saw Palmetto for 4 months and have no noticable change in libido (other than
the typical cp reactions<g>). The brand is Sun Down and has significantly
helped flow.

For what's it worth.

I dont have chronic prostatitis ( I had some sort of acute form once ), but
I know when I had severe GI problems that my limbido was very low, and when
I was nautious my testicles tended to pull up into my body as if it was very
cold. Its odd that you get hard notcurnal erections, this probably
signifies that there may be a mental aspect to the problem. I know this
sounds like an insult, but the brain can do weird things. I, for instance,
tend to pass out when blood is taken. When it happens I feel my testicles
tighten up, it feels very hot, I start to sweat and my stomach turns over,
then things just kind of grey out. This whole series of events is purely
mental, I used to have no problem giving blood, but once a lady started
acting nervous when she busted a vein of mine and I passed out that time.
Now every time I pass out. If your mind is doing something like that when a
sexual encounter takes place, your symptoms could be the result. It may be
that worrying about the sex and the prostate symptoms makes a physical
problem more severe as well. Something that tends to help people with their
sex drive is excercise. It also acts as a stress reliever so it may double
help you. Good luck - health problems suck, try to keep your spirits up.

Yep. I've seen this site before.

This does not concur with Consumer Reports, who stated
that Saw Palmetto can cause erectile dysfunction in men.
Also, the AMA link is dead, so I can't read the original
report. I'm aware that the AMA article reported no
erectile dysfunction in men, however. Even so, the
lack of product control in Saw Palmetto could account
for the discrepancy. For example, the Saw Palmetto used
in the AMA study may not have caused ED, whereas Consumer
Reports' overview may have included enough studies that
such an effect was noticed (due to slightly differing products).

This I hadn't heard. I'm not sure I believe it, though. This
would suggest that DHT levels would be high - yet I know
several men (including myself) who take Saw Palmetto and
are experiencing some reduction in pattern baldness.
Wouldn't that suggest DHT levels are dropping?

Also, the article at http://www.raysahelian.com/saw.html
cites several articles that show DHT levels dropped in
patients taking Saw Palmetto. To be fair, the article
also cited papers that did not show a difference in DHT
levels between Saw Palmetto patients and control groups.
So the jury is still out. My own experience is that I
have noticed reduced hair growth on my body and new hair
growth on my head. So you can imagine which side of the
fence I'm sitting on.

Maybe it takes longer than four months. I think I've been taking SP now for
well over a year. Either it lowers libido or I'm getting too old.<g> I've
noticed it the past few months. I can still get an erection with no problem
but have lost interest in doing so. Fortunately I live alone so it's not a
problem.

Geez...start a rumor that Saw Palmetto cures baldness and we'll all be
paying $50+ a bottle for it! <G>

Curiously enough, I have also noticed that my normal daily amount of hair
falling out has
decreased. I think I will buy stock in SunDown<g>.
