My elderly father has a femur / hip fracture, which I understand in an
elderly patient has a poor prognosis. He has a heart condition as well as
general osteoporosis, both complications. The cardiac doctor feels he
has about a 25% risk of dying from the surgery, and he feels he might not
recover even if he survives the surgery.

Can someone recommend any good reading for a somewhat detail-oriented layman
who can absorb most of the technical terminology regarding best practices
for treatment in this kind of case? I want to understand how the surgical
procedure works, recovery procedures, and risks/complications from those.

The alternative appears to be to let him live with a broken femur for what
might be another year to three of life. As "least-worst" options go, that
doesn't sound like a very good one. I want to understand the implications
of that decision as well.

Any help is appreciated.
