I haven't noticed that I am, but it's been awhile since I checked at
Deja.com or Talkway.com to see if there are posts there that I'm
missing here...

Gads, we're both nightowls too...what *else* have we got in common?

Welllll....I can be a nightowl. I don't know what I am anymore

This has been happening on all the newsgroups that I subscribe to and
the mailing lists as well, both on Flash.net and Juno.com. I am
beginning to think there may be something to this Y2K stuff that I have
been pooh-poohing for months. Them what knows more than I do told me
that if there were going to be problems, they would start turning up in
October due to some thing that I can't remember now (fiscal year
stuff??).

I wasn't too worried, and still am not. After all the messages are
getting through, even if they are a little scrambled in sequence.

Isn't everyone setting aside a bit extra in food, water, thinking in terms of
alternatives to human waste disposal, lights, heating and cooking in case of
power outage?Having been involved in disaster preparedness,SAR, and some
prehospital work thru my 27 yr career,I take it as a given to have a care to
expect the unexpected.I don't carry first aid supplies in my car because I'm
a ghoul and look for trouble, but I have been caught in rural Idaho on the
interstate with a critical victim,another bystander,at night with a
flashlight and a blanket as tools, doing CPR and attempting to stop bleeding
on a nearly severed leg.An ambu goes with me now, plus a pocket mask, etc. If
we fail to consider the possibility, however remote,of potential disruption
of services, who will???My neighbors come to me for help, don't yours, because
you are a nurse.Being a good girl scout didn't hurt,and" be prepared"will
never go out of style. When I worked disaster preparedness and interfaced
with civil defense locally,I was surprised by the out of date, inadequate
supplies that were cached, ditto hospitals, its all money, low stocks of
inventory, and reliance of transportation systems.Red Cross doesn't have
unlimited resources, either, and the drains on the system are tremendous. It's
a personal accountability thing, and no,I'm not a "survivalist nut" thank you
very much.Have a care,Athena

Nah, it's just Usenet at its best. I had been with a different ISP
for quite some time and never had a problem with the news feed and
then all of a sudden one day it started going whacky. This was a few
months ago...I asked about it and the tech support dude told me it was
because some jackass had flooded some of the newsgroup hierarchies
(the alt.binaries, specifically) with huge amounts of pictures which
used up all the space on their spools before it got to the newsgroups
I usually read and as it occurred late at night (wherever they were)
they didn't catch it until several hours later. I didn't fully
understand it, but I know that Usenet is a patched-together network
that depends on all the links along the way working just so for the
messages to actually get through when they are supposed to. It's the
nature of the beast, I guess. Some ISP's are notorious for having
crappy news feed, others do very well most of the time.

Judy - There is a shop here like that where the crafters "rent space"
in the shop and then set up their crafts. Several crafters here also
rent space in the hospital gift shops and/or they come to certain
nursing homes for craft shows periodically. I do some stuff with
wreaths, ceramics and shell jewerly but I make them for family and
friends, not to sell. I guess it would be fun but not sure how much
money you can earn.

Tropical fish ?!!! <checking previous posts to see where we agreed

We'll build that into your contract that you are allowed to browse and

First off Cheer...nothing I post here is ever "private conversation".
I welcome all comments. Furniture painting ? What did you do ? Like
antiques and stenciling you mean maybe ? It sounds interesting. Well
BTW - how do you feel about handling fishing bait if we expand this
shop ? <big silly grin>

I'm not terribly thrilled about the fish bait thing, especially if it
would include bugs (my son is the bug wrangler in my house) or slime (it
took me quite some time to be able to handle trach secretions without
gagging).

I have painted all of my life and really should have gone to college for
art. When I was in college for nursing I would find old broken
furniture, drag it home, fix it up and paint it. Mostly because we
couldn't afford to buy nice new stuff. When I was the school nurse at a
high school I became friends with the art teacher (big suprise, huh?)
and we started working together on projects and selling them at craft
fairs. I started getting a lot of interest in the larger pieces of
furniture I did and started taking commissions from people for huge
pieces: corner hutch, bed frames, dressers, etc. I left nursing to
devote myself to painting furniture full time.

I paint free hand. I recently did a trunk that was a landscape scene. I
do refinish furniture, usually making my own stains in colors that you
cannot find anywhere. Let me tell you, the two years of chemistry I had
to take in college have come in very handy in dealing with paints and
finishes.

I started working in nursing again this school year because I missed it,
especially in the schools. I loved school nursing. So I do that prn and
continue with the furniture thing.

An interesting note: my friend the artist has noticed that every single
nurse she knows is artistic in some way. They either paint, do some sort
of needlework, or something artistically creative. I went to the Nation
Museum of Health and medicine at Walter Reed earlier this year and there
was an entire exhibit entitled "All the Symptoms of an Artist" (cool
title, huh?) with artwork done by health care practitioners, nurses
included. It was incredible.

I'm sure there is a correlation between nursing (the Art and Science)
and artistic creativity, and I always thought it would be a good idea
for an article in a journal. What type of creative outlet do the nurses
who post or lurk here have?

The tropical fish came in when I decided if we had this big shop maybe my
husband's 60++ aquariums with all the fish could be moved there. They are
very relaxing to watch and sell very well. I crochet blankets, mittens and
hats. I make flower arrangements and I paint. I'm not very good at
painting but I love it.

Ok...you are exempt from the bait thing then. hahaha I have to admit

There is a big call for refunished furniture here. The older styles
are popular...art deco and fifties stuff. Some ppl here like
refinished antiques and others want them to stay the way they are even
though they might look as good.

Well ....I think that it is a wonderful craft that you got into. I
think anyone who take something and refinish it and make it look so
beautiful requires alot of talent and patience.

You might want to post a new thread and ask that question. It would
be interesting to see ppl's responses here !! I think nurses tend to
be "nurturers of the soul" and so artistic ability and creativity of
all kinds would fit in there for sure.

60 ++ aquariums ?? Geeze Judy !! That's alot of bubbling water
around your house. LOL How can he keep up with cleaning and
maintaining so many of them ? They are very relaxing .... and can be
quite beautiful. Ok...sounds great !! Fish tanks and wonderful hand
made blankets, etc !! Excellent !!!!!!

Cool Cinde...then you can work with Judy in the aquarium dept. :)
Salt water fish tanks are indeed interesting....and a good bit more
expensive than fresh water tanks I am told. Is this true ? Do you
have tanks with themes of a coral reef, let's say....the coral and
the fish and then the starfish, crabs, amoninities (spelling?)
It's soooo pretty to see !!! I have often thought about having a
salt water tank but I haven't even looked into it. Oh....you can
supervise the fishing dept !! No maggots needed. I'm sure we can
come up with other bait. LOL Wonder how the guys would feel if we
had a female head up the fishing dept. Hmmm. hahahaha I have
fished off the surf every year on vacation and I like it. Nothing
beats having fresh caught fish for dinner !! I always have someone
else bait my hook though. <big grin>

Your shop sounds like a greal place to hang out - hope it's not far from my
place! On vacation a few years back, travelling the back roads of Kentucky
(I'm allergic to interstates) we came upon a little wide spot in the road. If
it was a town, so is my condo. There were two old weathered shacks, gray like
old barns, attached together. A couple of dresses were on hangers on the
outside. Painted on the front was "Maggie's Mall". Cross the street from the
post office. Probably the old guys hang out at the PO and the old gals at
Maggie's. What a trip.

As far as creative outlets go, nature photography is my thing. I like oil
painting, and really started photograpy to have references to paint from. When
I go walking in the woods I talk out loud once in a while - can't help it.
"Oh, Wow!" when I see something really cool. Of course, I see some fantastic
subjects when I don't have the camera along. There are lots of unusual looking
mushrooms that grow in the woods here. Once, on an old dead log, I saw one of
those ruffly fungi things - about a foot wide, with lots of "petals" - the most
beautiful shade of pinkish peach. Like a huge rose. It was astonishing.
When I ran home and got my camera and ran back, some animal had gotten to it.
Switching back and forth from photography to painting really opens up a new way
of seeing things - I get ideas from one for the other. "You must look with
eyes that see" - it's either an old Indian saying or an old photographer's
saying - you can do a lot of looking without really seeing. Applies to lots of
things. I get real distressed when I read about schools for "Gifted and
Talented" kids - there is NO child who is NOT gifted and talented. My hubby is
the junk yard king, and has three generations of VCR's in the house. He can
fix anything with that pile of shit he keeps under the bed!At least it isn't on
the dining room table any more :o) He is the original gadget man. We got a
new dining room table a while back - I thought I would have to spend the rest
of my life using that ugly, ugly orange maple/formica early American junker.
We went shopping for a new futon at a furniture (the owner prefahs "studio")
shop, and gadget-freak hubby spied a dining room table with two sections that
slide together so one is over the other when closed. Seats 12 when open. Now
I just need to find a sofa with gadget-appeal and spring the trap!

I've never thought of nurses as being collectively creative, but I suppose that
is possible. I've known nurses who were very creative in solving nursing
problems, with really neat ideas.

Hi there Ramblin. :) You do realize our shop is just a figment of
our imagination right ? lol

In my limited experience with painting I have found that oils are
forgiving. You make a mistake, you can paint over it. Watercolors
aren't so much. And some of the craft paints I use aren't either. I
have an oil that my lil brother did ....he copied a Frazzetta
(spelling ?) print of a scuba diver encountering a sunken treasure
and a sea monster. It's amazingly close to the original....and I love
it cause he did it of course.

You sound like me. I do the same thing. I have taken pics of
mushrooms...the bright pink and orange ones are too cool. I also like
pics of the woods after a snowfall and icey streams, etc. But I'm an
amateur at it and often what I see, I'm not able to capture in film.

I bet. I've tried to do that but without luck.

I posted the question as a new thread and mentioned your name. So you
might wanna expand on it there. I think it's an interesting concept
that nurses are artsy. lol I'm thinking about my nurses friends and
many of them are into a craft of some kind. The ones who aren't tend
to be good cooks....and cooking is an art in itself. :)

Yes al of these are in my tank. I just got a anemone with 4 sabae clown fish
that are beautiful. Salt water is more expensive than fresh but so much more
interesting. I love coming home after a brutal day at work, like the one I had
today, and sit and just watch the fish. I wish there was a way to attach a
photo so you could see them.

It's easy to find them relaxing, when you are not the one cleaning, feeding
and balancing the water, not to mention breeding and moving fish around to
make room for the babies. I don't touch them except when he is sick or out
of town which does not happen very often. All I have to do with them is a
monthly magazine for one of the Tropical Fish clubs in the area.
