We have a small surgical practice, and I am trying to keep my office as
free of Microsoft lock-in as possible. I have been watching the
development of open-source EMR projects, such as OpenEMR and GNUmed. More
recently, I have been hearing about the VA's open source system, VistA.
Does anyone have any experience using VistA? Is it suitable for a small
office practice? I would like to hear from anyone who has some experience
with any of these systems.

In my opinion the answer is no. For the average doc, especially solo
docs or small offices with limited IT resources, not even close.
Unfortunately the open source EMR's just aren't up to snuff with the
commercial ones at this time. The one that I've seen that comes closest
is Patient OS. It's still in beta, but appears to be a cut above the
other open source EMR's. It's probably worth a look, at the very least.

Best of luck in your quest.
