The following quoted string was taken from the "X-Http-User-Agent:"
section in the header of one of Joel's messages:
"Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; AOL 5.0; Windows 98)"
A search of Deja.com for the quoted string above, revealed that the same
descriptor is used for just five email addresses on all of
sci.med.diseases.lyme.
They are:
Joel M. Shmukler, Esq jmsp...@aol.com
and
sue_zee sue...@my-deja.com
lymedlady lyme...@my-deja.com
zippythepinhead10101 zippythepi...@my-deja.com
antilymespam antily...@my-deja.com
FYI, all of the above *anonymous* senders are very recent - didn't start
posting
until Jan 19, 2001.

For one, I do. And I believe some others here do too. It may come as a surprise
to you, Deborah, but most people don't like being played for fools.
I will respect, though, that you are okay with it.
Meanwhile, you have to admit, this is a terribly exciting development. I
wonder, do you think he'll have Jenny weigh-in first? Or will it be sue_zee?
LOL!

The title of this thread is very telling - this is all a big game to
Brian. Well, smearing a person's reputation, spreading vicious lies,
and prolonging unpleasantness when everyone else has ceased arguing
just because of a personal axe to grind is not a game. Grow up and get
a life, Brian!

I don't like fake posters. I just had a very unpleasant encounter on
another NG with someone writing some nasty stuff about someone else
under a fake name. They were tracked down easily by one of the techier
types on the group..It was very upsetting for a lot of people. It is a
cowardly thing to do, IMHO. I like me to speak for me, myself( now there
is a heck of an awkward sentence fragment for you <g>). I hope this kind
of stuff stops .
It matters when "people" exhibit support for things when it is only
one person. Subject matter can be swayed, attitudes, lots of things.
Instead of going, "Oh, X thinks this, hmm..." it may be, "Wow, X and Y
AND Z- an awful lot of people feel this way!" When it's not true.
No, it is not the worst thing in the world nor even terrible in this
world of terrible things, but it is not good either, in my opinion.
None of us are perfect. Joel was right when he called me self-
righteous and sanctimonious- I am. I think many faults of most of us
have been revealed in these last trying months.

Okay, Jenny, here's the problem with your explanation. There are 3,300 (that's
three thousand three hundred) posts archived from *this* newsgroup that exactly
match the software string that was harvested from Joel's actual header. Of
those 3,300, only 5 (that's f-i-v-e) email addresses came back that possess the

As you and everyone here well knows, Joel has never been hesitant to speak his

said before all that line is is a listing of browser software that millions
use. If Brian truly thinks that that combo means that everyone who uses it is
Joel then Joel must be the most ubiquitous man on the planet.
Jenny
Don't. Save that for yourself. You are completely wrong and hopefully someone
with some technical knowledge will weigh in here and explain that you are
wrong.

URGENT: Gee someone go tell Judge Thomas Pennfield Jackson and he can
add this to his finding that Microsoft is a monopoly. Please provdie
this as subsequent evidence to the FTC, perhaps they can reconsider
their approval of the AOL/TWX merger!
NOTE: When one puts the same search into the box and looks for ALL
posts, it brings up 59000 hits on a variety of forums depending on what
one searches. This includes a variety of forums in which I would have
no interest including posters from the UK, from various sexual
preferences and with a variety of hobbies and interests which I do not
share.
If it makes anyone feel better: I am everyone on the planet who
disagrees with the point of view of the poster. I am all posters who
use AOL. I am all posters on this forum.
Now for the record: Let us please move on to continue our discussion of
substantive issues without further interruption from those obsessed
with the Lyme politics of personal destruction. This topic is not
substantive nor worthy of further discussion.

Joel M. Shmukler, Esquire, Director LYMECURE
Amazing. If it is true that Joel and
Jenny have been posting here under
multiple aliases, then we all can
question what this forum actually is.
Clearly, if one person says something and
then it is supported by the same person
or his or her partner under different
aliases, the overall sentiment of
community is skewed.
And then if that's the game they want
to play, we can all leave.
It's a free country. We are free to
destroy each other here. Go for it.
Let's not forget that the laws of this country
were founded on moral beliefs and that it was
intended that we seek well-being under
the protection of those laws.
Clearly our problem with Lyme disease
stems from the greed and deception of the ALDF.
If we can't expect teamwork and a group
effort from our own, we are no better than
our enemies. We are all the same measure of
scum.
Teamwork starts with being able to trust
each other. How can we trust each other
if this multiple alias thing is really going
on, skewing the perceptions of our community?
It's okay as a joke. I mean, we all thought
Frank was back under a new name, and Frank
was funny with the Killfilter thing. I think
no one here really wants him gone for good,
we would just like to see the aggression
turned down a few thousand decibels.
Aggression comes in many forms. Posting
under multiple aliases when it's not intended
to be humorous, is one.
Someday we will be smart and play on
the same team. We'll stop making the group
lopsided by presenting phoney duplicates of
the same view, here, by posting under
phoney names. It also means not slamming
each other.
This will, no doubt, be pounced upon.
But it isn't wrong.
'Don't really care, we are so saturated
by aggression from within our own ranks,
I think we are starting to be immune to
it. And if that's the case, what happens
to our will to fight the bad guys?
It would be good if we could *all* learn that,
"There is no greater wisdom than kindness."

Sorry, Joel, but apparently it must be a little more specific than that
otherwise many more email addresses would have also matched.
Of all the messages *EVER* posted to sci.med.diseases.lyme that are archived at
Deja.com (there has to be many tens of thousands), 3,300 came back with the
exact same string that was harvested from your header. The email addresses
responsible for making those posts were just five: Your's, lymedlady's,
sue_zee's, antilymespam's, and zippythepinhead10101's.
I challenge you to provide us with any possible (realistic) explanation of how
this could be other than your having posted under those aliases. I say that you
can't because there is no other possible explanation. Please prove me wrong.

Perhaps this poster is actually Kenneth Starr and now that the inquiry
into the important question of whether Bill Clinton did or did not 'do
it' with Monica is over, has nothing better to do.
For the record: The cited search string produces the following results
when placed into a browser and adjusted to search for ALL rather than
simply RECENT messages.
Further, rather than searching 3300 results or all of tens of thousands
of messages, as one scrolls back the numbers of hits change (deja
search is weird that way) and I note that I found several posts from
posters other than me even amongst the hits that this poster's search
provides. No results prior to a few months ago appear at all.
Here is one result from the search that the poster conducted that I
obviously did not post, not being from Cleveland and knowing very well
without asking to avoid the Cleveland Clinic:

While I guess it is possible that I am everyone posting in all of these
forums, it certainly stretches credulity to think so. I note that once
again as one scrolls back through the pages the number of hits and
pages constantly changes. So the numbers cited by the poster turn out
to be inaccurate:

What that proves is that the 'proof' proves only that I and these other
posters use a common combination (most of which comes 'embedded' in the
AOL browser) and that the posters post via deja.
So yes I use AOL 5.0 (I didn't like 6.0 so haven't upgraded). I'm not
even sure what version of Internet Explorer I use, since it
comes 'embedded' in the AOL software which upgrades itself
automatically on occasion. And I use Windows 98. As to the Mozilla
which Art says refers to Netscape, it is on my computer but I don't use
it (well RARELY). I know that Netscape is owned by AOL so perhaps that
is part of the AOL configuration.
I don't post thru my AOL browser but use deja because of added features
and improved functionality.
I have wasted too much time on this and on this poster for my entire
lifetime. This poster has spent more than the entire last week
attempting to do nothing but smear me and interrupt the substantive
discussions here. Anyone who is interested can continue the discussion.
I am only interested in sharing information about Lyme, and while these
attempts to obstruct my information sharing are unfortunate and
unforunately frequent, they are beneath notice and further comment IMHO.
I have asked my friends NOT to engage with this poster. Nothing can be
gained. This posters continued postings speak volumes about that person
and their agenda here. I will let them speak for themselves.
If it makes the poster feel better: I admit that I am everyone on the
internet. Further searches would reveal that I am posting in every
discussion forum on the planet as millions of different people.
Anything the poster encounters can be blamed on me if it makes the
poster happy to do so.
I will continue to post here about substantive matters and issues,
whether the poster ceases their open hostilities or not. It will not be
me interrupting this forum but the poster. I will not engage in a
scorched earth policy whether the poster chooses to or not is up to
them.
For anyone who wishes to engage in discussions of issues appropriate to
this forum, I welcome such discussions and the exchange of information!
Some of those who read here are acutely ill; some are trying to cope with
caregiving for loved ones who are sick. Some fit both categories. I would guess
that most of us don't come here for a casual read. Many of us can barely focus,
visually or mentally. Or we are in too much physical pain, too dizzy, too
fatigued to sit for long in front of a computer.
Trouble makers like Joel and his closetful of marionettes will come and go.
What motivates them only God knows
The inconsistency of Joel's roles as local support group leader and internet
nuisance is hard to reconcile. The helpful links he has posted, the
compassionate moments he may have had do not, in my opinion, redeem the
confusion and waste of time and energy he has created in a newsgroup like ours.
No one can doubt, reading his more helpful posts, that Joel is well-informed
about the symptoms and struggles that Lyme patients are trying to cope with.
That makes his games and time-wasters more cruel. It appears by his overall
record on this ng that Joel's need for control is much deeper than his touted
compassion.
Brian has been a reliable and substantive contributor here and in the offline
Lyme communities for many years. He does champion the underdog. He does object
to seeing sick people messed with. He does hang in there. There should be more
people like him in the world. Thank God he does keep digging.
What is pathetic is that it should even be necessary; yet it obviously has
been.
I wish Joel would take his convoluted mind games to a newsgroup that enjoys
that kind of thing, where people can afford to waste precious time and energy.
Carla
You forgot Zoot who obviously is me also.
The poster in question gets the inspector clouseau (sp) award for this
important work.
BTW: there is no Jenny. She is me also. (I know this may confuse those
who have actually met her but bear with me).
I am EVERYONE on the internet as I have admitted in a previous post. As
a matter of fact, this is really one of those twilight zone episodes
where the entire world has been fabricated by ME so that I can observe
the poster's reactions to various stimulii. The results will be
published in the extraterrestial journal of abnormal psychology. I will
post a reference!
Now I will be returning control of your television sets (and computers)
to you.....and I will be returning to substantive issues and
discussions thereof.

QUESTION:
What does "User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.0; Windows NT;
DigExt)\r\n" in a VU script mean?
ANSWER:
The "User-Agent" identifies the browser. This tag is placed in the
HTTP traffic, typically with each request by the browser, so that the
Web server will know the browser's capabilities.
*****The "Mozilla" designation is used by Netscape and Internet
Explorer
for historical reasons.**** A Netscape User-Agent would look something
like:
User-Agent: Mozilla/4.08 [en] (WinNT; I ;Nav)\r\n
Mozilla was a very early name for the browser that eventually became
Netscape (you'll notice this in various Netscape files). Internet
Explorer was somewhat of a late entrant into the browser market. By
the time it arrived Web servers were already checking for the Mozilla
designation as an indication that they were talking with a relatively
capable browser (as opposed to some of the other early browsers).
Therefore, Microsoft used the same designation for IE so that it
would be recognized as just as capable as Netscape. The actual
identity of the browser appears in the parenthetical part of the
description - "MSIE 5.0" This designation means that the user is
running IE 5.

As to the X files--during the initial stages of my illness I was sick
and had a fever but one day I woke up with nearly 103 F and was sick
enough to go to the hospital. (at that point I was undiagnosed and
remained so after several days as an inpatient).
By the time my girlfriend came to drive me to the hospital my fever was
even higher. I could not see straight and was practically hallucinating
from the fever. HOWEVER I REFUSED to leave until the VCR was set to
tape the X Files. My biggest concern in the ER was making sure that my
roommate would be home in time to tape it on his VCR just in case my
programming didn't work. (I'm pretty good with electronic equipment and
KNOW how to program the VCR but that day I WAS definitely having some
problems as the world was spinning round and round).
I got to the hospital and had nearly 105 F. I was reluctant to be
admitted but seeing the time of day, I agreed and they got me to my
room just in time to watch the x files. Then I watched the tape when I
got home.
