Some are chelating agents like oxalate, which "break down" stain, others
abrasives and some peroxides (bleaching agents.) Nothing is better or safer
than just have a good stain removal by dentist or hygienist with a
prophyjet, rotary cup and paste, or ultrasonics. In severe cases you could
look at various forms of office and or home bleaching.
