I have a flipper for replacing tooth #11. I have to admit that because
the dentist didn't want to file it down, I modified it myself so that
I could talk without lisping. I plan to get an implant soon but I sing
with a group and needed to file away some of it. The problem is that
now it doesn't stay in as tight. After reading a post on here about
toxicity and nerve damage, it looks like along with brain derangement,
my hair, feet and nose can fall off from these adhesives. Is this
stuff true? Also, if I use Fixodent or anything else you can
recommend, how do I get it out of my mouth? I never used this before.
Would I have to yank out the flipper or just use warm water....I have
no idea how to loosen it when I want to remove it.

Cream adhesives hold the tightest, however, you might not need
the 'ultimate' hold. You could try a powder adhesive to see if
that is sufficient for your needs. (BTW, Wal-Mart in my area does
not sell any powder adhesives. You have to go to a CVS, Walgreens,
or local pharmacy for a wider selection.)

From what I have read, the people with health problems from denture
adhesives are using the adhesive to make up for a poor fitting
prosthesis. This entails using huge amounts of adhesive to fill
large gaps under the plate. They end up swallowing significant
amounts of the stuff. Plus the actual danger and dose of the stuff
needed to be 'toxic' is still being debated.

Adhesives are meant to add a little security and comfort to a well
fitting denture. They are not meant to replace the need to have a
prosthesis that fits your mouth properly in the first place.

When patients show up with gobs of goo under their plate, we use
gauze to grab and peel the stuff off of their gums. There isn't
any real easy way to get rid of it.

Thanks so much for that clarification. Is there a brand I should look
for in the powders? I never did this before so am totally lost.

Super Wernets & Fixodent are two that come to mind, but the generics
might be just as good. It isn't like this stuff hasn't been around
for decades, so brand name *shouldn't* be (can't say for sure *isn't*)
that important.

Give us some feedback after you've used it for a few days.
