~*~*~*~*~*~*~ THE WEB GALLERY ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"The Web Gallery is different from The Body's longtime features ... and
it's also similar. It's different in that it works primarily (though not
exclusively) through visual arts -- painting, sculpture and photography --
similar in that one of its main purposes is to increase public awareness
about HIV/AIDS and people living with the virus."
Poet and activist Steven Cordova writes about this unique project in Body
Positive magazine
<http://www.thebody.com/bp/dec99/virtual_gallery.html>

~*~*~*~*~*~*~ SUPPORTING HIV-POSITIVE EMPLOYEES ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"Take This Job and Love It!" -- 25 brand-name companies that have
above-average track records supporting employees with HIV as well as those
otherwise affected by the disease, in POZ magazine
<http://www.thebody.com/poz/inside/01_00/loveit.html>

~*~*~*~*~*~*~ PAINTER-PERFORMER CARIS ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"Valerie Caris has used her body for money and art. Now it's a source of
healing, too."
Portrait of the Artist as Sex Bomb, in POZ magazine
<http://www.thebody.com/poz/inside/01_00/sexbomb.html>

~*~*~*~*~*~*~ AIDS IN AFRICA ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"It's four in the afternoon and Rose Ayo hasn't eaten yet. The 28-year-old
mother of five eats only once a day, usually greens mixed with beans or
maize meal... Yet one of the key elements of 'positive living' -- the basic
lifestyle changes that enhance the health of people with HIV -- is a
balanced diet. 'That,' says Ayo, who found out she was infected when her
husband
died of AIDS three years ago, 'is really hard.' "

Mark Schoofs, in part eight of his fascinating series about AIDS in Africa
<http://www.thebody.com/schoofs/africa8.html>

Additional articles in this important series:

~*~*~*~*~*~*~ CARING ABOUT AFRICA ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

AIDS activist Ann Northrup explains why we should care about the lives of
South Africa. She describes an important global activist movement that
offers hope to millions of Africans. In Survival News, from AIDS Survival
Project
<http://www.thebody.com/asp/nov_dec99/action.html>

~*~*~*~*~*~*~ ONGOING PLAGUE ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan announced that
AIDS is killing 5,000 Africans every day. Assistant Surgeon
General David Satcher warned that if left unchecked, the
HIV/AIDS epidemic will kill more people than any of the terrible
conflagrations that have marked this century.' "

Like the plagues that killed millions in the 6th, 14th and 17th centuries,
AIDS will destroy entire nations -- the story in AIDS Survival Project's
Survival News <http://www.thebody.com/asp/nov_dec99/africa.html>

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ CUBA DONATIONS ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"The situation in Cuba is unique... The 40-year-old embargo of Cuba
prohibits U.S. pharmaceuticals and their foreign subsidiaries from doing
business
with Cuba, making it impossible for Cuba to purchase protease inhibitors,
antiretrovirals, and other life-saving medicines."
Medical Donations for Cuba, in AIDS Treatment News
<http://www.thebody.com/atn/333.html#donations>

~*~*~*~*~*~*~ DEALING WITH NEUROPATHY ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The Body interviews John Senneff, author of "Numb Toes and Aching Soles:
Coping With Peripheral Neuropathy."
<http://www.thebody.com/senneff/interview.html>

~*~*~*~*~*~*~ FLU VACCINATION RESULTS ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"A study testing the effectiveness of flu vaccination in people with HIV
was recently published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine. In this
study, 102 people with HIV were divided into two groups, one of which received
the
flu vaccine while the other received a placebo or dummy shot. The
researchers reported that flu was later confirmed in ten people who received
the
placebo, but not in anyone who received the flu vaccine." From Body Positive
<http://www.thebody.com/bp/dec99/medical.html>

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ FINANCIAL INFO ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Check out The Body's financial issues pages for questions on health, life,
or disability insurance. For legal questions, click here.
<http://www.thebody.com/financial.html>

~*~*~*~*~*~*~ RAPE IN THE GAY COMMUNITY ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"Rape is a subject that few people want to talk about, especially in the
Gay community. However it is a lot more common than most members of the Gay
community wish to admit."
Rape in the Gay Community: The Hidden Epidemic, by Rick Sowadsky
<http://www.thebody.com/sowadsky/gay_rape.html>

~*~*~*~*~*~*~ HIV-MILLENNIUM BUG ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"Y2K may cause minor inconvenience, they say. The other big millennium bug,
HIV, will continue to defy eradication for the time being, creeping into
the next century, invading bodies all over the world, wreaking havoc on lives.
No matter what you may have heard, AIDS isn't over." From AIDS Survival
Project's Survival News
<http://www.thebody.com/asp/nov_dec99/latex.html>

~*~*~*~*~*~*~ MANAGING CARE ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"My medical expenses on my 1998 income taxes totaled a whopping $9,634.00.
These expenses are the cost of my insurance plus co-pays and medical
treatments not covered by Medicare or my HMO." John McFailing recounts how
he manages managed care, in Treatment Issues from Gay Men's Health Crisis
(GMHC)
<http://www.thebody.com/gmhc/issues/mayjun99/care.html>

~*~*~*~*~*~*~ STRUCTURED TREATMENT INFORMATION ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"Since interest in the therapeutic potential of a planned, or 'structured,'
'drug holiday' is by no means a retreat from earlier admonitions against
missing doses willy-nilly, the consensus is that the experiments need a
different name: ergo, Structured Treatment Interruption, or STI, the first
snappy AIDS acronym of the new millennium."

Project Inform founder Martin Delaney explains why the first thing on your
wish list should be Structured Treatment Interruptions, in POZ magazine
<http://www.thebody.com/pinf/delaney_letter.html>

~*~*~*~*~*~*~ DRUG HOLIDAYS ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"Until further information arrives, drug holidays are a speculative venture
at best. [T]he alleviation of drug side effects is their one self-evident
attraction. But that siren song may be just a diversion from the
sophisticated treatment strategies and agents needed to
overcome multi-drug resistant HIV."
"Taking a Break When All Else Fails," by Dave Gilden, in Treatment Issues
from Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC)
<http://www.thebody.com/gmhc/issues/apr99/break.html>

~*~*~*~*~*~*~ FIRST PERSON ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

" 'Excuse me, Miss... your test result came back positive...' When I heard
those words, I was in college, as clueless as one can be about HIV.
Although I had lost my mother to this horrible disease, in my mind she 'fit'
the
description."
In Women's Treatment News, from PWA Health Group
<http://www.thebody.com/pwa/wtn/winter99/positive.html>

~*~*~*~*~*~*~ PEDIATRIC TRIAL RESULTS ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

the results support our federal treatment guidelines?

~*~*~*~*~*~*~ OPPORTUNISTIC INFECTIONS FORUM ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The Body is pleased to announce the addition of a new doctor to answer
questions about opportunistic infections. Judith Feinberg, M.D. is
professor of clinical medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of
Medicine,
and a principal investigator for the AIDS Clinical Trials Unit. She writes
extensively about the treatment and prophylaxis of opportunistic infections
for major medical journals as well as in recent books on AIDS.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~ HIV/AIDS DATA ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

prevention efforts to communities currently at greatest risk."
CDC Guidelines for Improved Data on U.S. HIV Epidemic, from the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention
<http://www.thebody.com/cdc/data.html>

~*~*~*~*~*~*~ PEP ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is sometimes referred to as the
'morning-after pill' for individuals with unanticipated sexual or injection
drug related exposures to HIV. This is misleading, as PEP is not as simple
as
swallowing a single pill."
"PEP Talk," in Treatment Issues from Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC)
<http://www.thebody.com/gmhc/issues/julaug99/pep.html>

~*~*~*~*~*~*~ REFUTING HEAL ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Wondering how to refute the theory that HIV does not cause AIDS? Project
Inform founding director, Martin Delaney, asserts why HIV is the cause of
AIDS: "As we see it, from a scientific viewpoint, the alternative view is
akin to the notion that the earth is flat, or the belief that creationism
is somehow a valid alternative to evolutionary science." from Project Inform.
