Weyl writes the following in his nice little book on symmetry:
"The Arabs fumbled around much with the number 5, but they were of
course never able to insert a central symmetry of 5 in their
ornamental designs...They tried various deceptive compromises,
however."

Can anyone give me a reference to a book or an article which contains
images of these attempts at pentagonal symmetry in Islamic art.

Thanks,
jude

Hey Jude (lol). Here is a book that might help you...

Critchlow, Keith; "Islamic Patterns -- An Analytic and Cosmological
Approach", Thames and Hudson, 1976,1989, ISBN 0-500-27071-6. It has
many pictures. (If this message duplicates, sorry -- I've tried
several times to post this and never see it in the list.)

Bonnie.
