Correcting NATURE tv show on sea wolves not eating salmon skin//190th book A day in the life of AP, King of Science
Yes, I watched the repeat of NATURE "Canada: Surviving the Wild North". One of the segments in that show was sea wolves on the West Coast of Canada and waiting for the salmon run.
The narrator explains that the wolves easily catch the salmon but do not eat them. Rather instead, lay them out on the ground in spots where birds come and skin the salmon. Only after the birds skin the salmon do the wolves eat the head and soft internal parts.
The narrator claims that the wolves do that because the skin is full of parasites that can kill the wolves.
This is too much to believe that wolves have a medical doctor intelligence to know what parasites are and the cause of sickness and death.
My interpretation of the wolves behavior is that it does not take much in experience of eating salmon to know the Scales are sharp and nasty especially if you swallow a scale. So my interpretation is that the wolves all sense and realize as they catch these fish that the scales can cut their mouth and tongue to pieces.
So I believe that is the cause of the sea-wolves behavior and not a parasite avoidance.
Now there are other examples in Nature where animals learn what to avoid in food. I remember a NATURE show where a orphan elephant is raised and of course did not have its mother to teach it to avoid certain plants, where in that show they performed surgery to remove palm leaves.
But then to hypothesize that sea-wolves do not eat salmon skin due to parasites is too far of a stretch. A stretch that makes their intelligence on par to a human medical doctor.
