It was either Lorentz or Poincare who first wrote down that equation
above. There was no way to derive that equation from SR directly.
You need to apply the Lagrangian Method to the spacetime equation. In
doing so, even the forgotten Voigt transform and the infinite others
all conclude with the same equation. <shrug>

To say "moving clocks run slow" is a VAST oversimplification of what
SR says.
SR does not claim that both clocks will return older than the other.
