I think you mean "extremal principal" in the (unstandard) sense in which it
is used in this book by Arthur Engel:

perimeter of a rectangle, find dimensions of max area.] 2) Is calculus
variations helpful? [ For given perimeter, find max area between a
curve and a line] type of problems.
