Other readers will be able to comprehend Peano's Axioms in the language of set theory. JG, maybe not so much.

Using only these 5 axioms and some basic set theory, most if not all of modern mathematics can, in theory, be derived.
These 5 axioms respectively are based on 5 common sense facts about the natural (or counting) numbers that have been known for centuries:
1. 0 is a natural number.
2. Every natural number has unique successor (or "next number") that is itself a natural number.
3. Different numbers cannot have the same successor.
4. 0 is not the successor of any natural number. It is the "first" natural number.
5. Any natural number but 0 can be reached by a process repeated succession starting at 0.
Sorry, John, but it really can't be made much simpler than that. :^(
