What makes a natural language natural?

An April 2022 review in The New York Times described GPT-3's
capabilities as being able to write original prose with fluency
equivalent to that of a human.[7]

Chomsky was too dismissive but his point is valid. If there
were a decent generative grammar of some natural language
it would be a trivial exercise in AI to write sentences in that
language. It would be far less trivial to create any significant
discourse.

This is the fifty million monkeys problem. We can get technically
correct output but without meaningful content.

Lets set a bogey. Giving as much of a headstart to the AI as we
can lets ask for an AI romance novel readers of such novels can
read and enjoy as much as any human such novel.

The use of AI in translation strikes me as an interesting research
problem. I predict that the formal part of translation would be
easy brought under control but what we might call the ontology of
AI would cause endless confusion.

I believe that is what is already happening.
