Judging from all the postings about the issue, it seems that Paul Scherder
has been taking a professional matter a little bit too personally, after
which he has been venting his anger on this forum.
Working in the localisation industry for more than seven years now, both as a
free-lance translator and as a Project Manager, I have never experienced NOT
being paid for a job that I did.
If there would have been a problem with any of my translations, my first
reaction would certainly not be sending 'flaming emails' to the company that
provided me with the work, but I would investigate the problem(s) first. If I
would be convinced that some of the errors higlighted were unjust, I would
detail my counter arguments in a report and send this to the agency, i.e. I
would resolve the matter in a professional manner with all the parties
involved. I would see no reason why that would not work. What I also would
certainly NOT be doing, is splashing the matter out over the Internet, trying
to get back at the company.

I cannot aggree more with one comment that was made earlier, that not only
translators read these pages, but also Translation Agencies and Larger
Companies looking for translators. I'm sure they will NOT be too impressed by
Paul Scherders' 'professional approach'.

Hi!

What do You suggest me to do if I don't get paid? I'm waiting for payment for
translation jobs I have done for a danish translation agency betwen september and
december last year. I have been working for them since the eighties and they
usually pay late, but now it seems that they decided not to pay altogether. I
suppose they found another portuguese translator.

As a free-lance translator in a different country, the only pressure I can put in
the company is by threatning their reputation. They know that I can't sue them,
because that would cost me more than I can afford.

I send them a new invoice every month, but they don't even bother to answer.

I feel it's my right and duty to warn other free-lance translators, so that they
can avoid this kind of situations. Thats why we read this newsgroup.

Well, pkanters, I think I agree with you but ...

" If there would have been a problem with
any of my translations, "

I didn't know one could use a past conditional in an ' if ' -clause.
That is a funny turn of phrase !
Are you an American by any chance ?

Well, if you want to know how get your money !!

Dig out the purchase order and contact International Factors A/S in Denmark.
You will have to pay them a fee, but the eventually get to everyone no
matter where they are in the world and when that happens they'd better pay
or their credit rating will suffer very badly.

This approach is more professional than defamation and threats from
solicitors/lawyers, and you will be treated with respect from then on. It
normally cures problems like late payment or not payment at all.

I have advised several of my clients to use this method and it works
everytime!

Kind regards
