In WOII German PoW-camps have names like Stalag IVb, of Oflag LXIV.

Are they German abreviations or indeed English?

Does ...lag stand for (German) Lager (=Camp)?

Thanks

Yes. Stalag is short for Stammlager, and Oflag - well, I don't know
exactly as my German is rather poor, but the "Of" stands for "officer" as
it was a camp for officers.

Checked in a dictionary: Offizierlager.

Sorry, folks, I found the answer myself.

Stalag is short for Stammlager, camps for NCO's (Sergeants) and enlisted men
only.

Oflag is short for Offizierslager, camps for Officers only.
