Hello

Could someone please tell me what the English equivalent of this Spanish
saying is?

"Lo que Dios no da, Salamanca no presta."

I would also be grateful if anyone could recommend websites that have
Spanish sayings with either English translations or explanations in Spanish.
I have already tried searching the web for this saying, with no luck.

It is also used in latin "Quod natura non dat, Salmantica non praestat"

It means that, no matter how much one does study (as Salamanca
was the oldest and most important of spanish universities), if
he is not gifted by nature it will be of no use for him.

I cannot think of an equivalent in english, hope it helps.

Yuk, good, but note that the spanish expression is often used
on high-level (near literary) environment.

The word "praestat" as a supposed translation of the Spanish "presta" can
only be accepted as pig Latin, anyway.

I'd translate to something like "He who has been snubbed by nature, cannot be helped by formal education"

The pig one was good but as another poster said, this one's supposed to be a bit more formal.

To what 'something' are you responding?

On usenet the original posting is often not available to some or many,
