I am running Aquarius since 1996 and all these years I receive e-mails
saying that we should do it for free. At Aquarius we do quite a lot of
unpaid things and projects but what really bothers me is the idea that
people are ready to pay for an ice-cream, a magazine, a newspaper, a
dinner but they feel that any Internet service should come free of any
charges. We work many hours a day and we really do our best to provide
the best service we can. Why some translators think that only
translation works should be paid?

While I agree with you about you are not supposed to work a lot for free and
it is not correct to expect everything coming from the Internet for free,
let me just make a remark about announce board services.
The question is: within these boards there is a so keen competition, that is
almost impossible to get even a 20 dollars assignment in one year; so it's
comprehensible that a lot of people think any subscription with a fee is not
the worth.
I know it is not your fault, because this happens to every board service for
translators, but accounts must balance.

since, as you say, almost no jobs ever come from them. So there is little
incentive to subscribe. I believe they are used mostly by job posters just
trying to shop for unreasonably low rates, and then use them to grind down
the translators they normally work with.

you. Let me explain:
1) At Aquarius you cannot bid less than 7 cents per word. It seems
like a reasonable bottom line. We actually got quite a lot of requests
lately asking us to lower the minimal bidding price.
2) Right now as we speak there are 78 open projects at Aquarius. Some
catch as high as 20 bids. Some - 1 or 2. It depends on your language
combination. At the same time there are much more jobs in the
mainstream language combinations. It makes a pretty healthy balance.
3) We post the majority of our own projects on the site and we most of
the time grant them through the site.
4) Lowest bidder never (ok, almost never) gets a job. Will you bring
your car to the technician who will outbid the rest offering to change
your exhaust for 10 dollar? I don't think so. People remain reasonable
even in the times of recession.
5) There is seldom a difference between the attitude of the company
who posts an ad in the paper and a company who posts the ad on
Aquarius (ok, let's leave our friend from Toronto out of this
equation). Agencies need people to staff the project. They definitely
shop around - that's not abnormal - you'd do the same in their
position.
BTW - it's finally getting sunny here. I really hate this rain ;)

Professional translators know that they need to spend several percent of their
gross income on advertising their services and this budget gives them more than
enough to pay for all major sites and still ahve some money left for yellow
pages and professional memberships.
If a serious translator has a problem to spend several hundred dolars for
membership, he is either just a beginner, or have a competency problem.
