Well, your question seems like its quite broad, but perhaps I can tell
you what I specifically find interesting about the relationship of
Japanese culture and Japanese art (and its relationship to the language).
More specifically, language and architecture... Some of the connections
that I have found to be most interesting are the concepts of space/time
("ma") in both the language (time), and in architecture (space). Kisho
Kurokawa has written much about the Japanese concept of space/time
("ma"). It seems that in Japanese, the most important part of a
conversation is often that which goes unexpressed-- Or if we talk about
body language, it would be that which is NOT done. The western concept
would, I beleive, be the opposite. One of the founders of Noh theater
had said "Senu tokoro ga omoshiroki", or "That which is not done is of
interest". In Shodo, it is the space that are left in the strokes that
become important also. When you relate that to architecture, I beleive
you can see that same "space bias" in the traditional structure. Western
structures, on the other hand, seem to be object oriented!
If you are looking for a more in depth look at some of these concepts,
there are some excellent books that I could recommend are: (These are
very vague description, because I'm moving on the 1st, and have already
packed up all my books... so if you need me to be more specific, ask
after the 1st, and I'll look the information up):
Kisho Kurokawa.................Symbiosis and Architecture
Kunio Komparu..................The Noh Theater:Principals and Perspectives
(I forgot authors name)........Japanesuku no Mikata
Tanizaki Jun'ichiro............In'ei Raizan
If you want to know specifically about architecture, both Kurokawa and
Jun'ichiro talk a lot about these. Art in general is more talked about
in the other books.
I hope this will help you. If you know of any other good sources, please
tell me because I am always looking for more.
