have had their faces removed.

Can anybody make out the "??" in the binding fold where it says "Picture
of ?? battle"? I don't think it is "sushi."

最初の行は「狂畫（画）」ですが（狂歌とか狂詩とかいう
場合の「狂」、ふざけた絵）、肝心の次の一行（何々合戦の
「何々」）が、ページの折り目に入ってしまっていて読めない
ようです。
私も寿司ではないだろうと思います。

なお、「芋」（右側は「芋」の軍団）の兵士が掲げている旗は
「芋酒屋（いもざかや）」。芋やこんにゃくの田楽で一杯飲ませて
いた燗酒屋（今で言えば立ち飲み屋）のことです。
寓意は、燗酒屋では、これまで芋などの田楽を酒の肴にして
いたのだけれど、新たに「煮蛸」を酒の肴にして飲ませる店が
生まれ、それらの間で競合が生じている、そして多分後者に
圧倒されている　ということでしょうか。

ご紹介、ありがとうございました。
明治初年だとすると、もう少し何らかの風刺の意味が
あるのでしょうかね？（「いも」ってのは「田舎者」の意味が
ありますので・・・？）
