弟子 = private student, diciple, 付き人 = attendant, acompanying person.
In some fields, the first stage of private student may be 付き人,
but later when he advances, he may be working alone, being independent
from his master, but relation of being his 弟子 usually continues.
Exceptionally one og them decides to stop the teacher/student relation,
but usually it continues lifetime (and beyond).
for example:
Luke is Yoda's 弟子, but not his 付き人.
