Something strange happening to sci.lang.japan here.

Unless there has been a new post within the last couple of days, the folder will be empty. There used to be dozens (hundreds?) of previously read posts. Two of my other groups have about 12,000 and 16,000 old posts still available for rereading. sci.lang.japan: "0 new 0 unread, 0 total."

Is this unique to me, or is something going on with this group at eternal-september or wot?

Bart, I don't understand your query. When I check sci.lang.japan I
read some posts and then delete all of the posts I just got so my
folder is emptied. I use the Agent newsreader. Often I check the
group and there are no new messages.

Somewhere in your news reader program's folder there is a file called
newsrc or newsgroup.list, or something similar, which hold the information about the newsgroups you read and ID's of messages you have already read, etc.

Sometimes news server renews or reset the numbers and the information saved there becomes obsolete...
Deleting the number behind the group names and restart the application may help. (or not...)

(I'm late, but happy birthday, Bart!)

I've never had a newsreader that would allow deleting a message that one didn't write oneself. My current newsreader won't even let me delete my own posts.

Up to 0 new, 0 unread, 12 total at the moment.

It was just Stupid User Error #17: I had for some reason set it to display
only unread posts. "All" works much better!
