Hi,

Can anyone tell me, what "Rashomon" means?

It is the title of an early movie by Akira Kurosawa...

"Rashomon" was the big south gate of ancient Kyoto city in Heian period,
when Kyoto was the capital of Japan ("mon" means "gate").
Many robbers lived in the gate, after it became a ruin.

It was (is?) the name of one of the gates to Heiankyo (present-day Kyoto).
I may be wrong, but I believe it was the main gate at the south side of
the city, opening onto the main street "sujaku". The gate at the palace,
at the other end of Sujaku, was "Sujaku-mon".

Rashomon was the title of a story by Akutagawa Ryunosuke, which has
absolutely nothing to do with the main plot of the movie -- the main story
comes from another Akutagawa story, "In a Grove" ("Yabu no naka").

As for where the gate got the name in the first place ?????

Hello,

"rasho" and "rajo" means 'citadel'. "mon" means 'gate'. I think the
word 'rajo' came from China.
Rashomon (or Rajomon) means the front gate of Heijokyo or Heiankyo.
Heijokyo was the capital from 710 A.D. to 784 A.D.(the Nara Era).
Heiankyo was the capital from 794 A.D. to 1869 A.D.(from the Heian Era
to the Edo Era). Heijokyo is called Nara City now, and Heiankyo is
called Kyoto now.
'kyo' means capital. So Kyoto means the great capital, Tokyo means
the eastern capital. ('tou' = east)
