The statement isn't exactly clear what files are covered.
It is EXTREEMLY unfortunate the Delorme
- won't design new versions to save in older format. I changed
versions (avoiding the use of the word "upgrade" to SA6 and can no
longer send map files to SA5,4, 3 users.
- Won't provide a standardized import/export format for user generated
information. Draw objects, start, finish and stops. Lat/lon import is
a very bad joke as is object export - almost all meaningful data is
stripped out.
Even the "big bully" MS Word allows you to save in earlier formats and
many interchange formats.
Also, MS doesn't claim patent writes on the words you type!!!!
I respect Delorme's need to protect their intellectual rights but are
very ticked that they continue to prevent users from accessing user
entered data and block sending maps to users of previous versions.

Snds like an opportunity - i.e., Lowrance-vs-Garmin improves the breed
to our benefit, sorta (wanna buy my 6-month-old GIII?). Bet these
policies will change rabbit-quick when alternative s/w shows up. Ozi,
Precision Mapping, GARMIN/Lowrance (??), or newcomer (????)

Not only that, but the car-gps guys are busy specifying a
non-vendor-specific format for the map data on CDROM. I think we'll
soon see map-data sold that will be usable by third-party software.
I wonder why Delorme even cares how you use the CDROM. They get the
same money either way.

Does Delorme include vendor data that points to restaurants and other sites?
This is the reason that they care. Vendors pay to insure that they are
included on the maps. This is also the reason that vendor data will show
up in the G-III+ maps, I suspect.
