I'm new to the GPS world too. I'm wondering about GPS units for boats. I
know there's a few different ones on the market, most notably the Garmin
176/176c (http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsmap176C/) and the new Magellan
Meridian Marine(http://www.magellangps.com/frames/frame2.htm). Both are
portable (the Meridian more so) and the Garmin 176c comes in color. The
other option is a dash mounted (permanently fixed) unit like a Northstar
941XD (http://www.northstarcmc.com/941xd.htm).

I've got to be honest, I really don't know what the best bet is here. I
also here that some people have both mounted and portable units. I think
that mounted units cost more but is there really a benefit for the extra
cost?

Any advice or comments would be appreciated.

Steve, the benefit is screen size (I have a 176C in my truck).

The question is as always - money against benefits.
The internal fixed units are usually with larger screens and attached to an
external antenna. If you pay more you will get chart plotting capabilities
and colour screen. On the other hand, you will find that it is very
convenient to have a unit in the cockpit of the boat. So, either you install
in the cockpit a repeater screen to the fixed unit (once again - cost
issue!), or you buy a portable unit to use underway in the cockpit while the
fixed unit is used for routing/planning, or if you settle for one GPS I
would prefer the mobile unit, which can be carried downstairs when needed,
with an option to connect it to the 12V of the boat as all mobile units eat
batteries very fast.

We have a summary of the marine units we have reviewed here:

Does not have to be the case. On my boat I have a Northstar mounted just
inside the companionway on one of those nifty West Marine swing brackets. I
can sit at the nav station and look over my sholder or I can see it from the
wheel when in the cockpit.

LOCO dearest,
while the contraption you describe is surely working it cannot be very
convenient. I have tried to give general advice, including the option of
using the handheld device at the navstation (connected to the ship power to
conserve batteries).
It of course depends also an boat size and layout. Two weeks ago I (and a
group of friends) sailed open beach cats through 180 miles of open sea - the
GPS units were hanging on our necks all the time in a plastic bags.

Mr Meir,
I don't know the reason for the smart ass response to my post. Are you
that insecure? I didn't knock your idea. I only offered an alternative. My
"contraption" as you describe it is an aluminum swing arm sold by West Marine.
Hardly a "contraption" It allows the use of a large screen chart plotter both
at the nav station and in the cockpit. I would say that's pretty damn
convenient.
I would suggest you take your medication before logging on in the future.

Grahm,
You idiotic pinhead. If you think my reply is out of line to the jerk who
flames me for no good reason you need to increase your dosage. I attempted to
offer a constructive suggestion to someone who was seeking a little advise. I
didn't slam any of the previous posts when doing so.

You wern't zaped for "no good reason" Bub. You posted sarcastic comments
regarding my reply to another pinhead who flamed me for no good reason. Go
away.

Are you having a senior moment? Are you confused? Have you been reading this
thread from the beginning? I didn't slam Mier for disagreeing with me. I
countered his insulting reply to my helpfull post. Put your helmet on and get
in the game.
By the way turn your spell checker on.
