Where do I go to look at and purchase the GPS equipment I here people
talking about ? From what I've read, I'm interested in an Eagle Compass.
However, I really want to look at one before buying it. I would also like
to know what type of antenna and visibility these units need. For example,
can I throw a device like and Eagle Compass in my backpack and will it
receive GPS info or do I need an unobstructed antenna view ?
Thanks,
Jeff Z.
Jeff,
There are several places you can go to check out GPS units: Marine
stores ( West Marine, E&B Discount Marine, local "boating" stores --
check your Yellow Pages) and Sporting goods stores (Dick's, Eastern
Mountain Sports, REI, your local "hunting and fishing supplies" type
stores...). Even K-Mart is carrying GPS units (mostly Magellans)!
You best bet for the Lowrance "Eagle" line may be the Marine stores,
as Lowrance is big in the marine electronics business.
Hope this helps,

Jeff,
The Eagle Compass is actually a package deal that includes an Eagle
Explorer GPS and Chicago Map Corps. "Precision Mapping Streets" software
for the PC. The best price I found on the package was at a local Egghead
Software retail outlet.
You may or may not need (want) the whole package, in which case you should
look for the Eagle Explorerat a store like West Marine (or a mail order
source).
Unfortunately, you can't just toss any GPS in a backpack in "set and
forget" mode. You could provide an external antenna on top of the pack, as
described in other articles in this NG. If you'd like to do this, the
Eagle may not be your best choice, since it won't take an external
antenna. Check some of the Garmin units (like the GPS II+) for this
feature. Even with an external antenna, your success with the GPS will
depend in part upon just how dense the "deep dark woods" are that you
happen to be traversing. The new Eagles and Garmins do quite well in
forested areas. I like my Eagle a lot for planning, plotting and
navigating mountain bike trips around the maze of logging roads in my
area.
Good luck on your purchase.
