Hi,

Finally, Garmin has released a Metroguide Europe for the price of just a
single country.

http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/MGEuro.html

And an upgrade price for existing owners of a single country for just
£47.00!!

My upgrade coupon and CD is already on it's way, well done Garmin it will
surely be a bestseller and hopefully kill the "unofficial" market.

Have you Jack and/or Joe got an advanced copy to look at ? Any impressions
to share ?

Regards

Not here, we generally don't get European maps to review... Maybe someone will
supply us with a review...

Is garmin down... Again?

$ telnet www.garmin.com 80
Trying 65.208.249.100...

No response... Either the Internet has a hole, or Garmin has crapped out
again for the umteenth time in the past few weeks... Maybe if they ran a
supported web server they'd get better uptimes...

Now this is worth the price, if true... No unlock codes? The whole of europe?
Cool. All we need now is editing, and a decent mapsource and I'll be (Mostly)
satisfied...

Hakan,

incredible! I would have lost a bet ...

Now I have a few questions.

First and foremost: does it have complete road coverage for
Germany and other central European countries? I could ask for a
few specific streets that weren't in the old MetroGuide to find
out.

Second, does it permit auto-routing?

If yes, this incites the obvious third question: What's the
difference between the new MetroGuide and City Navigator Europe
or City Select Europe?

Guess I won't get answers immediately, but I'll be grateful
later as well.

Wow, sounds almost too good to be true. I have several Metroguides,
guess I can only use one for the upgrade coupon, eh ? :-)

Hope there's no "unlock code" scheme though, that is, you get the new
CD back, and an unlock code for the region your old CD was for, and
are allowed to buy the rest ? This would put us back to square one, of
course. Doesn't sound like it from the website info though.

Gilles.

Gilles,

Well, I suppose You have some friends who could buy the rest and upgrade and
then all gets the benefit..............

I don't think there will be any unlock codes for MG/RR, I think Garmin has
understood that Europe is almost as integrated as the US.
They have probably got another supplier or a better deal on the map data and
made a market choise.
It is really nice when the voice of the customer is heard and hopefully I
can get rid of M$ Autoroute..................

Yes - I guess the value of original MapSource CD just went up :-)

Hopefully. I'm going to send them an email as ask (I also intend to
ask if they need the entire package back, the CD with jewelcase, or
just the CDROM - might save a few Euro on postage)

Definitely - I won't get rid of MapPoint 2002 Europe though - if it
could xfer maps to the eMap, I'm not sure which application I'd get
rid of, ahem. (I rather like the interface, speed, and look and feel
of the MS mapping products - for instance, I wish MapSource had its
address search feature)

Gilles.

Before you get too excited - I got the new Metroguide Europe with my
Garmin V the other week.

It came with a voucher for an unlock code (obtained online) for one
region, in my case for UK only.

Is it the same for the US versions (with autorouting) as I'm planning
on a tour around the mid-west next year.

Are You sure it wasn't the City Select Europe ? Normally this is bundled

Yes, you're right, I beg your pardon for confusing the issue.
- it's European City Select V4.00.

I should've checked the box first !! Doh!

However, it does cover addresses and all the streets in the UK, with
autorouting.

What, then, is Metroguide? I've looked on the (now working) Garmin
site and if I had to choose between City select, Metroguide and R&R
I'd be at a loss.

Best regards,

Gilles,

Could You in a few word summarize (or supply a link) the added value of Map
Point 2002 versus AR2001 in connection with a GPS.
I have checked MS site but don't get the grip of the features apart from all
these statistics and "corporate" stuff.

I have an eMap and I use it together with AR2001/MetroGuide when traveling
around Europe in my RV.
It's a bit bulky to create routes for download so if Map Point is easier I
sure should appreciate the information.
Does it for instance include Camp-sites, parking-places?

Hmm, we may have a misunderstanding here - my point was that I like
the UI and speed of MapPoint (or Autoroute or S&T), their map
presentation, fuzzy search etc. vs. MapSource, and if they did what
MapSource can do in connection with the Garmin GPS (be able to send
maps to the GPS, xfer waypoints, routes, tracks etc), I wouldn't see
much reason to use MapSource any more. Out of the box, both Autoroute
as well as MapPoint have very limited GPS functionality - moving map
is basically all that is supported.

The map and POI data, as well as the basic UI and functionality are
the same for MapPoint 2002 Europe and Autoroute (respectively for
MapPoint 2002 and Streets and Trips 2002).

One difference between MapPoint and Autoroute is - as you mentioned -
the business mapping and data analysis features - beyond the
capabilities (functionality) to do this stuff, MapPoint also includes
demographic data to help with this.

As far as I'm concerned, the biggest difference is that MapPoint is
programmable - it has an object model and can be "remote-controlled"
via automation, it is available as an ActiveX control to integrate
mapping into your own apps, and it supports Add-ins that allow to add
your own commands to its menu. For example, an add-in called AGPS
exists that adds quite a few bells and whistles to the moving map
functionality.

This being said, there is a steep price difference between
S&T/Autoroute and the two MapPoint versions - the latter definitely
target the business user at Office range prices.

Regards,
Gilles.

fine! It seems we have now almost reached the next stage where

Next step: all roads in the whole world.
