I am looking for a handheld GPS for use on a kayak, to be used offshore for
locating and marking reefs for diving and fishing. Any suggestions as to
which ones are worth looking into would be appreciated.

It must be submersible since it will get wet in saltwater.

Thank you. Steve

Garmin GPSmap 76 or 76S. Both are water-resistant and both float.

Use this page to compare the two feature-for-feature (tick the last
two boxes on the page).

Both will accept Garmin's Bluechart and other marine map products.

Also, both units are available much cheaper than shown on the Garmin's
site.

No matter the waterproof rating, I would still recommend putting it in
a waterproof case. Better safe than . . .

If you wish to use it with loaded-in maps, check out the maps for your
area.

There are many which will be able to do what you are asking, you may
want to be a little more specific about your needs.

www.gpsinformation.net has all sorts of useful articles, reviews, and
links.

I second that notion. The Water Proof ratings on most handhelds are really
just water resistant. Like submersion for up to 30 min. What that also means
is that if the GPS is sitting in standing water (like in a cup holder), the
water can seep in after 30 min (or less as the unit wears).
