I am so disappointed. I was planning a hiking trip this weekend and
then another next weekend. I tried to turn my eTrex on tonight, and
nothing. Fresh batteries, another set of fresh batteries, and still
nothing. I had left it turned on accidently all last night and when I
woke up this morning and went to get it, it was almost flat, but
working fine. I took the batteries out for the day to charge them and
when I put them back in tonight... dead. Tried the reset function,
cleaned the terminals, nothing. No likely water ingestion. Normal
temperature conditions. No other significant factors.

To top it all off, my wife had her purse stolen today as well.

"Good Friday"... I hope it IS a better day tomorrow ;)

Lucky it is still under warranty. What a pain in the neck.

Best regards,
Ben Johnson

But it's also Friday the 13th. Will they cancel each other out?

My sympathies.

"Good Friday the 13th". Sounds like a movie involving a Pope wearing a
hockey mask.

Actually it is a lot closer than you might think. The derivation of the
number 13 being unlucky can be traced back to Christ and his 12 apostles
- a total of 13 and Good Fridy is the day that Christ was crucified
according to the Catholic calendar. (I personally think it was Thursday
but that's another story.)

Yep, tried that first... unfortunately it didn't fix the problem.

There is a possibility that the EEPROM that store the unit's programming
have lost their information due to the total loss of battery voltage.
If you have the capability, you could try to reprogram the eTrex. Good
luck!

Contact Garmin customer service.

I had the same problem. One morning I couldn't turn it on.
Don't know whether it was a dead switch or software. Garmin had it
back in a bit over a week, but that won't help you this weekend.

FWIW I try not to leave any unit with a back up battery without a main
batteries. I keep a set of alkalines around for 'standby' service.
Even batteries so run down they can't operate the unit, will off load
the backup while you are charging the other set.

Just a thought, though it is unlikely it had anything to do with your
problem.

Hi Ben,
Goto http://www.firstwaypoint.com/
This is about the best site I have seen for Etrex

They have a section there that deals with sick Etrex's perhaps it will help
you.
Cheers

Ben:

Not more than an hour after reading your post, my new Venture crapped
out--only 4 days old! Screen locked then I removed and replace the
batteries. When nothing happened on the screen after the ON button
was depressed, I was depressed.... and I just put the handle bar mount
on my bike and was headed out for my first ride!.... oh well, so I
won't know my location. I'll just have to fall back on that old
addage, "Wherever I go, there I am". I feel your pain, man! I may
try leaving the batteries out until Sunday morning and then put 'em
back in and hope for a miracle. You never know. If that doesn't work,
I hope they're as quick on the turn around as Roger Russell says.

(Luckily wife's purse still ok but I'm keeping an eye on it.
Needless to say, she's not too impressed with my choice of toys ;-)

Thanks for the idea. Turns out the aluminum pop top from a beer can
is perfect for inserting between the two spring connectors. But it
didn't work. Thanks for the idea anyway. I've found you can judge
how good a company is by how they handle problems. We'll see.

As far as your Paris problem, that makes perfect sense to me:
There're enough attractions in Paris to boggle a human mind let alone
a little device like this.

What all this has proved to me is the truth of what someone else said
in this newsgroup -- that in addition to your GPS receiver, you need
to make sure you have a compass and a map. Always have a backup.
Don't trust it with your life.

Problem fixed. Gave dead eTrex to GME (Warranty) on Tuesday, just
picked up my replacement this afternoon (Thursday).

They decided it was uneconomical to repair and replaced it with a new
one.
