Junior may have given me an orphan because I just scanned through the
last 5000+ messages in this group and saw no subject that appeared to
address my question.-- which simply put, is this: Can I run this from
the Gateway, and if so how?
TIA for any helpful remarks.

Be careful not to over-estimate my knowledge. I have no clue, so you
may correctly assume I have no idea what to do, and I promise not to
act insulted!
The antenna has two conectors - a 9-pin that I'd call a serial
connector, and a round 6-pin connector such is used by a PS-2 mouse.
The Gateway does not have the latter but has 2 USB ports. Is it
likely I can get it to function with an adapter between the 6-pin
cable connector and the USB port?

The 9 pin will plug into the serial port. If you don't have one you will
need a USB to serial adapter to have a serial port to plug the gps into. The
ps-2 port is only to supply power to the gps. If this unit will also accpet
batteries then you won't need the ps-2 connector, otherwise you will need to
devise a way to extract the 5V from the USb to hook to the ps-2 connector.
It should be doable.

Thank you for the prompt & courteous help. I'll try getting a
USB-to-PS-2 adapter.

Sorry, but I think you missed the first acts of the play. The GPS
ant has both a serial connector (presumably for the data) and a round
PS-2 connector, no doubt to filch power. The serial connecter goes
to the serial port, and I'm hopeful an adapter in a USB port will
allow the GPS to think it is conected to a PS-2 port.
I may be wrong but what ca I lose by trying?

PS/2 (MD6) F - USB A (M) Adaptor worked fine on a leadtek GPS with a
Serial/PS2 connection. This was under win 98se.

I wasn't clear. My Gateway 1450e _does_ have a 9-pin serial port,
along with a monitor port, a parallel port, and 2 USB ports.
Strangely enough the serial port is not shown in the manual, and there
is no port that will accept a PS-2 (round 6-pin) connector directly.
Several have suggested that the appropriate adapter will allow the
system to run.

Have you searched the www.randmcnally.com website for the manual?
A quick look on the website did find a software update for streetfinder deluxe
2000. Winxp was a significant update - and most software that involves i/o
requires a software upgrade. You should be sure to download the update and
apply it.

Like Sgt Schultz, "I know nothing" - or almost nothing. I do know
the GPS doesn't work without both of the two cords connected. I know
one of them doesn't plug in without an adapter. And I know that a
inquiry to Rand McNally produced a non-helpful answer. (no support)

No, I haven't done that - chose not to bother until I can at least
connect! Thanx.
