Assuming the Garmin GPS V is the same price (I purchased the basic version
on clearance for $350) as the 76 or possibly the 76s, which is better if my
primary use is Marine Navigation with the Bluechart CD (Americas). Does the
76 offer significantly better features for marine use of does the GPS V work
well while also allowing me to use it's highway routing features?

Also, among the mail order companies, do any of them offer a good quality
protection plan. I have a 176c being serviced thanks to a protection plan
from West Marine, I would like to have a similar plan for a handheld but
would like to take advantage of mail order pricing.

Any assistance on these questions greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Scott

The big difference is that the GPSmap 76(S) will contain tide tables where the
G-V won't... However, the 76 can't do autorouting... Both will display
BlueCharts...

Thanks for the information Jack. I decided to return the GPS V and go with
the 76s since my primary use is marine navigation and I use a Pocket PC with
Pocket Co-Pilot 3.0 for "on-the-road" navigation. Pocket Co-Pilot is a
great program and it's nice that a Pocket PC can serve multiple purposes and
can easily be upgraded (I actually have more than one navigation program for
my Ipaq). The display on the 76s is nice and the additional memory,
compass, and altimeter, tide tables, etc. will be nice for my needs. I just
finished loading blue chart data from CD on the unit and creating a route
for a trip (by boat) I will take later in the week. I really like the size
of the 76s, it seems like a really nice unit, very similar in capabilities
to my 176c in a much smaller form factor.

On another note the Blue Chart data does seem to be the same as that on the
cards. The best feature of the CD's is that I can load the same set of
charts on 2 units.

Thanks again,

Scott
