Have you ever tried Street Atlas 4 to make routepoints by just "clicking" and then upload them to the Garmin in seconds with the GRMN/GRMN Host mode..?? Also there is freeware in the URLs below that will up/download everything stored in the receiver in one operation... The only map program I ever saw that would download and display the active route and a real-time trackplot with the NMEA output was an Austrailian program, KPV NeverLost... --------------22F97C354D45 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; name="G7to-wp" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline; filename="G7to-wp" http://www.bridge.de/~tom/g7to-301.htm http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/rimmer/waypoint.htm --------------22F97C354D45--

Using a 12XL I managed to *upload* waypoints from a computer
(or even a HP48 calculator) to a Garmin 12XL using the NMEA0183
format. Far more convenient than entering them on the GPS itself.
But attempts to *down*load to a computer were unsuccessfull up
till now. The NMEA FAQ does not tell how to.
The records spitted out by the GPS every second do NOT contain any
$GPWPL record.
It makes no difference if NMEA/NMEA or NMEA/NONE is selected on the
GPS. In the latter case, upload is blocked and the download line
keeps on spitting the records.
The Garmin protocol is very tedious and even differs from one to
another Garmin device, so I prefer the NMEA.

Thanks,

Klaas

Hi Klass,
I believe you will find that if you switch to GARM/GARM interface mode,
you will be able to upload/download waypoints, routes, etc to a
Garmin. Unfortunately, in NMEA/NMEA mode, you cannot
upload/download.

Upload:

Just send "$GPWPL,03409.00,N,11815.00,W,LAX\r\n"
to the Garmin (which should be configured to NMEA/NMEA)
and when you select 'waypoint list' you'll see a waypoint
called LAX at 34o09' North and 118o15' West.
If you already had a waypoint with the same name (in this
example LAX) it will be overwritten.

The active waypoint in the Garmin is given in the WPL message, so
to download, you have to make each waypoint in turn active with a
GOTO - a bit tedious...

If you make a route incorporating all the waypoints, and make it
active, then you get a different WPL message out in each data frame,
1 waypoint in each, as well as the RTE message giving the list of
waypoint names for the route.

To download set the goto waypoint from the front panel and watch for
the message on the interface. It is also
possible to set up a route and watch for the messages. This is quite
a bit more cumbersome than using garmin protocol but it should work.
