I am sure this question has come up before, but does anyone known where
I can find specs for the navigation database format used on the
Travel Pilot, Philips-Carin, and VDO/DaytonVDO car navigation systems?

thanks,

Are you asking about the map data source, if that's the case you can
find info here: http://www.gpspassion.com/Software/Maps.htm
I need to add the Systems using the TeleAtlas maps which according to
the TA site are Blaupunkt/TravelPilot, Clarion, Mannesmann VDO,
Philips/CARiN and Kenwood's system..
If you're after the actual format that's proprietary to each system.
Planning to offer some competitive maps ;-)

Actually, I found that the navigation database does not know where I live,
plus a few other places I am interested in. The Map data source for
Australia comes from:
http://www.whereis.com.au/products/vehicle_navigation.jhtml I guess I
could try asking this company when they will include these locations into
a future release, but I wont hold my breath. I thought it would be a nice
challenge to see if I could do it myself.

Ross.

The Carin/VDO Database on the CDROM is in a proprietry format. What is the
version you have right now. Yours may simply be out of date. The Whereis
database has come a long way in just a year or so.

You cant change it yourself but you should be able to pick up a new CD at an
upgrade price from Strathfield Car Radios or similar. Just take your old CD
with you or they'll charge you full price - not exactly sure how the upgrade
process works with Whereis CD's.

It's pretty recent:
Date : 2002-03-19
Navigation DB: au_pa_ald_02I_20020318.cpr

Way back when Philips owned Carin, you could get the spec if you asked them.
Given that the database has to work in a number of navigation systems, the
"proprietary" format is probably (??) still the same as the original Carin
system.

That is the March/April version 5.0 release. The next version should have
been released in August but was delayed although it may be out by now
though. The next big one is due middle of next year and will be a worthwhile
update.

The data format is proprietry and is probably a requirement of Sensis since
they require security for their data. It is the same as the original carin
system but I believe there are several formats on the one disk.

What area is so wrong for you?

There is no reference to where I live - Wamboin (near Queanbeyan, off
the Sutton Road). It also doesn't know about some streets in Coffs Harbour.

I dont think there are several formats on the one disk. The two data files
are:
carindb 134Mb
CARINET 758kb

the only other files are:

BIBLIOGR

That is simply because those areas havent been given auto-routing attributes
yet. The map only includes areas that are attributed for automatic guidance.
So far all the major cities and metropolitan surrounds and all the
connecting highways and secondary roads through Australia are covered and
the rest is being added at quite a fast rate. If the attributes are not in
place yet, then the streets are not included since it will be unable to
guide you onto them safely. You will fnd lots of rural towns have only a few
main streets, such as Bathurst and Orange, Port McQuarie etc. It will guide
you through the town center but may not have residential streets beyond main
roads in these towns yet. Since theyre all done by hand, its a heap of
labour content that takes time to insert and test.

The latest update due now (if it isnt already released) has many new streets
for towns and small cities added and the version after due mid next year
that has a huge increase in coverage.

Sorry about the formats, mine is a development disk not a commercial
pressing so mine is likely to be different to yours.

that's what I thought. Which led me to think that it would be
neat to put in my own places of interest, rather than wait for
Sensis to do it. Its a pity that they dont make it open and extensible
to allow value adding and customisation. I realise there are many
arguments for and against proprietary vs open etc.

I assume a development disk is not easy to obtain.

PS: I'm curious about your local knowledge wrt your email address :-)
