I have been using Tomtom2 as road navigation and it works pretty well, but I
was also looking for a software to be used as marine navigation. When I sail
parallel to the coast I can use TT2, but it is not the best option.

What do you recommend me? I have a dell axim x5 with haicom 303MMF.

Kind regards
Carlos

Hi Carlos, lots of choices, put down the three that might be more
cost-effective but just as good as the more expensive, all three have
pc and pda versions. All have user groups.

NavPak: http://www.globenav.com/

Fugawi: http://www.fugawi.com/indexcom.html

Ozi: http://www.oziexplorer.com/

Also MaxSea, Captn, but not as knowledgeable.
Regards Fitzy

There are many solutions available.

However, your decision on software/hardware will be largely driven by
availability and choice of charts for your area.

Proprietary charts will usually only work on proprietary software/hardware.
For example BlueCharts require Garmin software/hardware, and vice versa.

For some countries there are available reasonably cheap, official electronic
charts that will work on universal mapping software such as OziExplorer. In
other countries such as Australia, digital charts come at high cost from
official suppliers and only work on selected, government approved software
for which a license to use the charts has been paid.

There are an increasing number of companies retailing digital charts around
the world......but you need to look carefully at their original source
material to assess reliability, currency, and whether you are getting
anything better/different than what I have mentioned above, and at what
price.

Scanned in paper charts will work with universal mapping software, and can
be the best way to go.

Thank you for your answers. I was looking for something related to European
charts.
