Can anyone answer the simple question, which is hands down the best marine
GPS, I of course am talking about memory, satellite connection, accuracy,
and maps accurate ones for northern quebec, lake chibougamou, and lake
mistissani, I have heard alot of good things about the garmin 76c, but can I
download an accurate map of lake chibougamou and how accurate are we talking
about, more accurate than the lowrance model(supposedly cheap but a great
model with very good detailed maps) can anyone help me?

Alas, the question is not simple, unless you put some bounds on it. The
76c you mention is not even in the same class as the "hands down best
marine GPS," which would be a permanently installed device used on large
vessels and costing tens of thousands of dollars.

But if you would put a dollar or size limit on it, someone will be able
to give you the answer you're looking for. :)

Also, I would suggest you first shop for the mapping/charting
software that meets your needs, and then select from the hardware that
will run that software.

Happy trails,

Depends in how you need to use it. I charter boats and use the 176. It
is perfect for me, Nice and portable with a decent sized screen. A
larger permanent mount device would be just about permanent to me.

I am very pleased with my 76C. For boating in the US,
Garmin's "Recreational Lakes" mapping software has all the
detail of a nautical chart.

However, Recreational Lakes does not cover Quebec. Instead,
Garmin sells "Topo Canada", which does not show water
depths. It only shows the shoreline.

For more GPSMAP 76C info, see my 10/18/2004 posting to this newsgroup.

All GPS units have excellent accuracy. If you can get better
maps on the Lowrance, that would be the way to go.
