Hi
I'm doing a research project on careers in oceanography and marine
sciences that involve scuba divng. I visited this site and I think that
it will be very helpful. But I was wondering if you knew of any jobs (or
sites with info about jobs) that involve diving, and how to go about
geting trained for them. Any other sites about diving in general would be
nice too. Thanx!

and went and did a lot of interesting things, including taking classes
to the South Seas each January to dive!

There are several institutions you might look at including Scripps,
Woods Hole and there is a school of Marine Sciences at the University of
Miami (I have another friend who works there). You might also search
under "Sea Grant" which should pick out interesting schools.

What this sentence leaves out is what those careers really were. I know
several people who had marine biology backgrounds and could not find
relevant paying work. There are volunteer jobs (= work with no
paychecks) at zoos. My advice is to look at the job markets and figure
out: i) what it takes to get into those jobs, ii) how many other people
are trying to get into them, and iii) once in those jobs, how long do they
typically get to keep them. I repeat, try to find job openings now and
see how many there are, what they do, how much they pay, etc. Then make a
decision.

Yes, then again there was a following sentence. They basically both
had long careers as college teachers. The one I know best did
state of the art research until he was about 40, when he changed
jobs to a position which emphasized teaching. That was his choice.

"had" meaning past tense? Do you know anything about the adjunct situation
in college teaching these days, or are you living in the past?

The other comment I will make is: What relevance does your aquaintance
with two people, one of which -- since he had a long career -- and was 40
therefore got into it long ago, have to do with how easy or hard it will
be for the person with the original question to reach her goal? Sure, we
can all find someone who does something. The question is how many try and
fail? Don't forget her interest is in biology.....one of those areas where
even you have admitted there are too many people.

As in retired. Past 65.......etc.

Yes Art, people do succeed on their own terms even these days. Christa
was asking for examples, mini-stories, in your argot,
I knew of two. I mentioned them.

Actually, if you read the original letter, rather than reacting like
Pavlov's dog, you would realize that her interest was oceanography,
and whether a science careers could be combined with scuba diving.
