Hello,

I'm looking for a very simple (preferably as little math as possible)
description when is a good time to employ a Dirichlet or Cauchy boundary
condition to a 1-d flow and solute tranport finite element model. Any
references or useful discussion is much appreciated.

King Bass

PS. please do not suggest a google serach!

Hello king,

good reference on solute transport is: Applied Contaminant transport
modelling (1995) Zheng C & Bennett CD.

Chapter 8.5 will answer you questions in detail.

Dirichlet (constant source) basically when you've got an area where
the concentration are expected to stay constant over the modelling
time frame. Eg. NAPL's where water under the plume will be at
saturation with the contaminant.
Cauchy is used when you know the flux of contaminants coming into the
model. In MT3D this is used by specifying a recharge rate &
concentration. Yuo could use it if you have soil contamination and
know the concentration in the soil moisture and the recharge rate.

Hope that helps.

Cheers
