The actual branch of earth science involved in this, when named,
generally causes hackles and voices to rise and minds to close and
havoc-dogs to be released all over the place, so I didn't mention it.

It's interesting--though that might be hard to appreciate until a few
decades have passed and people can look back at all this with some
perspective; for the bare facts of the situation, as described in the
subject line here, at least if one is looking at the history of
science itself, illustrate in a little detail the main drawback of the
catastrophism approach: it excites people who either have not been
trained to use their minds or have been trained to use them for
different purposes. This causes them to do a lot more than release
funds for research and supply the oxygen of publicity to the spark of
discovery.

http://blogs.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/timblair/index.php/dailytelegraph/comments/hold_your_fire1/

Those are the first two mentions of it that I came across today.
Judging from the Instapundit.com blog, it's spreading and hysteria is
mounting, at least in the blogosphere (Instapundit's special area of
interest), and loaded terms are being flung by all
combatants...yadayadayada.

Didn't mankind invent science to avoid this kind of stuff?

Considering that some of the e-mails referenced the AGU and GRL, I
suppose it's rather topical after all. Anyway, this morning's Dot
Earth blog in the "New York Times" includes an open letter to students
from "a climate scientists who engages skeptics" and asks for input
from "young scientists in related fields." Even though I'm not a
scientist, I figured it's worth reposting here as it may be you they
want to hear from -- link to the whole Dot-Earth post is at the bottom
of this excerpt (the links mentioned in this excerpt are live there;
note, for clarity, since font changes aren't possible, I have added
bracketed info here on when the enclosed letter in this excerpt begins
and ends):

"...Dr. Curry has written a fresh essay that’s essentially a message
to young scientists potentially disheartened in various ways by recent
events. You can read the piece below and it’s been posted on
Climateprogress.org, as well. (I’ve added links to provide background
where acronyms are used, etc.) Given the ongoing focus here on “
Generation E,” which clearly includes young scientists focused on
climate and energy, it’s a great fit. Whether or not you agree with
her, I think you’ll agree that this piece serves as a valuable
conversation starter on the practices and goals of science in an age
of deepening global and social complexity and also deepening political
polarization.

[Begin Curry's letter]

"An open letter to graduate students and young scientists in
fields related to climate research:

"Based upon feedback that I’ve received from graduate students at
Georgia Tech, I suspect that you are confused, troubled, or worried by
what you have been reading about ClimateGate After spending
considerable time reading the hacked emails and other posts in the
blogosphere, I wrote an essay that calls for greater transparency in
climate data and other methods used in climate research. The essay is
posted over at climateaudit.org.

"What has been noticeably absent so far in the ClimateGate
discussion is a public reaffirmation by climate researchers of our
basic research values: the rigors of the scientific method (including
reproducibility), research integrity and ethics, open minds, and
critical thinking. Under no circumstances should we ever sacrifice any
of these values; the CRU emails, however, appear to violate them.

"My motivation for communicating on this issue in the blogosphere
comes from emails that I received from Georgia Tech graduate students
and alums. As a result of my post on climateaudit, I started receiving
emails from graduate students from other universities. I post the
content of one of the emails here, without reference to the student’s
name or institution:

"Hi Dr. Curry,

"I am a young climate researcher (just received my master’s degree
from xxx University) and have been very troubled by the emails that
were released from CRU. I just want to applaud and support your
response on climatesudit.org (95% of it :) ). Your statement
represents exactly how I have felt as I slowly enter this community.
The content of some of the emails literally made me stop and wonder if
I should continue with my PhD applications for fall 2010, in this
science. I was so troubled by how our fellow scientists within the
climate community have been dealing with opposing voices (on both
sides). I hope we can all learn from this and truly feel that we are
going to need voices like yours to fix these problems in the coming
months and years.

"At the heart of this issue is how climate researchers deal with
skeptics. I have served my time in the “trenches of the climate war”
in the context of the debate on hurricanes and global warming. There
is no question that there is a political noise machine in existence
that feeds on research and statements from climate change skeptics. In
grappling with this issue, I would argue that there are three
strategies for dealing with skeptics:

"1. Retreat into the ivory tower
"2. Circle the wagons/point guns outward: ad hominem/appeal to
motive attacks; appeal to authority; isolate the enemy through lack of
access to data; peer review process
"3. Take the “high ground:” engage the skeptics on our own terms
(conferences, blogosphere); make data/methods available/transparent;
clarify the uncertainties; openly declare our values

"Most scientists retreat into the ivory tower. The CRU emails
reflect elements of the circling of wagons strategy. For the past 3
years, I have been trying to figure out how to engage skeptics
effectively in the context of #3, which I think is a method that can
be effective in countering the arguments of skeptics, while at the
same time being consistent with our core research values. Some of the
things that I’ve tried in my quest to understand skeptics and more
effectively counter misinformation include posting at skeptical blogs,
such as climateaudit, and inviting prominent skeptics to give seminars
at Georgia Tech. I have received significant heat from some colleagues
for doing this (I’ve been told that I am legitimizing the skeptics and
misleading my students), but I think we need to try things like this
if we are to develop effective strategies for dealing with skeptics
and if we are to teach students to think critically.

"If climate science is to uphold core research values and be
credible to public, we need to respond to any critique of data or
methodology that emerges from analysis by other scientists. Ignoring
skeptics coming from outside the field is inappropriate; Einstein did
not start his research career at Princeton, but rather at a post
office. I’m not implying that climate researchers need to keep
defending against the same arguments over and over again. Scientists
claim that they would never get any research done if they had to
continuously respond to skeptics. The counter to that argument is to
make all of your data, metadata, and code openly available. Doing this
will minimize the time spent responding to skeptics; try it! If anyone
identifies an actual error in your data or methodology, acknowledge it
and fix the problem. Doing this would keep molehills from growing into
mountains that involve congressional hearings, lawyers, etc.

"So with this reaffirmation of core climate research values, I
encourage you to discuss the ideas and issues raised here with your
fellow students and professors. Your professors may disagree with me;
there are likely to be many perspectives on this. I hope that others
will share their wisdom and provide ideas and guidance for dealing
with these issues. Spend some time perusing the blogosphere (both
skeptical and pro AGW blogs) to get a sense of the political issues
surrounding our field. A better understanding of the enormous policy
implications of our field should imbue in all of us a greater
responsibility for upholding the highest standards of research ethics.
Hone your communications skills; we all need to communicate more
effectively. Publish your data as supplementary material or post on a
public website. And keep your mind open and sharpen your critical
thinking skills. My very best wishes to you in your studies, research,
and professional development. I look forward to engaging with you in a
dialogue on this topic.

Curry was interviewed by Neil Munro at "National Journal Online,"
excerpts here:
http://insiderinterviews.nationaljournal.com/2009/12/email-controversy-divides.php

This isn't the Dr. Curry Show, of course, but this excerpt shows why
her name keeps coming up:

/"My issue is that everybody [in the climate science branch] wants to
fly below the radar screen on this because it is a hot potato. Most of
the scientists out there are busy in the retreat-to-the-Ivory-Tower
mode, and they don't pay much attention to the public discussion on
this topic.... People don't want to be distracted from their research
by a lot of noise, and they don't want to be put in a position where
their personal or scientific integrity will be attacked.

"Nobody [in the climate-science sector] wants to talk about this. When
I put my essay out on climateaudit.org, I thought I would be one of
500 people out there making statements, but oops, I'm out there by
myself.

"Scientists want to avoid publicly criticizing other individual
scientists, [and] I have my own position about who did something wrong
here, but I want to give them the chance to defend themselves and let
the investigation proceed."/

I especially like two points made in this interview. Early on: /"I
frankly think that [the content of the e-mails and reports] has less
to do with partisanship of the scientists than with professional egos
and rivalries, which are amplified by the highly charged partisanship
surrounding this issue. Scientists have no idea how to react to all
the criticism being made about their science by advocacy groups, talk
radio, etc. Their reaction to criticism coming from right-wing
partisans typically makes the scientists appear to be left-wing
partisans. So what we are really seeing is the polarizing effect of
the advocacy groups and the mainstream media, in forcing apparent
partisanship of the scientists."/ and yet /"We need climate glasnost:
openness, transparency, and freedom of information. Scientists who
engage in advocacy activities generate lack of confidence in their
science, both from within the scientific community and from the
public. The public should expect accountability from our major
institutions, particularly the IPCC."/

This will be difficult to balance, but it will be utterly impossible
if everybody is either shouting at each other or retreating to the
Ivory Tower. Facts, data (open to everybody), reproducible results:
these are the only things that can calm people down.

Well that and, perhaps, a little perspective, administered by a good
writer: "Our civilization has decided, and very justly decided, that
determining the guilt or innocence of men is a thing too important to
be trusted to trained men...When it wants a library catalogued, or the
solar system discovered, or any trifle of that kind, it uses up
specialists. But when it wishes anything done which is really serious,
it collects twelve of the ordinary men standing round. The same thing
was done, if I remember right, by the Founder of Christianity. "
-- G.K. Chesterton, "The Twelve Men," in /Tremendous Trifles./

I'm Buddhist, BTW, and this isn't a religious post; that was just
Chesterton's basis. What this gives me instead is the thought that
perhaps something in the horribly bright light from the first nuclear
explosions imprinted all our minds with the mistaken impression that
science is a dreadfully serious thing, when it is really only science;
and as a consequence, some of us who are not specialists, as well as
some specialists who are not ordinary people, became blinded, lost
their way, and couldn't find the boundaries again.

For a little more balance, this one's from a nonscientist; in fact,
all I know about him is that he's an American and does occasionally
hilarious and sometimes tasteless political satires from a
conservative viewpoint that end up appearing all over the right-hand
side of the blogosphere, as well as occasional and sometimes
interesting hot rod videos that don't but still pop up here and there
all over the political spectrum. I'm talking about Iowahawk, if that
rings a bell with anybody.

With that view of him, it was quite a surprise to see this post at
http://www.windsofchange.net: "I know what Iowahawk does for a living
and it involves crunching massive amounts of high-value data in near-
real time. He's taken off the welding mask, put down the beer bong and
vintage porn, and picked up a laptop so he can walk the rest of us
through the basic mathematical processes used by Mann, Jones, et al to
model climate. I'd suggest that everyone read it..."

I did read it, and it is worth passing along (a confession -- I
skipped through the intensive mathematical analysis in the mid portion
of the lengthy article): http://iowahawk.typepad.com/iowahawk/2009/12/fables-of-the-reconstruction.html

Warning: Most of the sidebar links, etc., will probably be offensive
to some (though the comment above about 'porn' is a joke - it's more
the political stuff I mean); they aren't connected with the gist of
the article, though, and for those few who might be so inclined, you
will not be able to use them in an ad hominem attack on the article's
substance. It's science, or at least a branch of mathematics, and so
is just out there for everybody to see and make up their own minds
about. That, not the extraneous stuff, is what I'm pointing to here.

It really does help in getting the whole thing into perspective and
informs the reader on the basic points.

Iowahawk's discussion (excerpt from the beginning):

"Again, all that math-y spreadsheet-y stuff above was not meant to
perfectly replicate any specific study done by Mann et al.; those
specific studies differ by the choice of instrumental temperature data
set, the choice of proxy variables, whether series are smoothed with a
filter (Fourier transform etc), and so on. My goal was to provide
interested people with a hands-on DIY example of the basic statistical
methodology underlying temperature reconstruction, at least as
practiced by the leading lights of "Climate Science."

"If you've followed all this, it should also give you the important
glossary terms that should help you decipher the Climategate emails
and methodology discussions. For example "instrumental data" means
observed temperature; "reconstructions" are the modeled temperatures
from the past; "proxy" means the tree ring, ice core, etc. predictors;
"PCs" mean the principal components.

"Is there anything wrong with this methodology? Not in principle. In
fact there's a lot to recommend it. There's a strong reason to believe
that high resolution proxy variables like tree rings and ice core o-18
are related to temperature. At the very least it's a more
mathematically rigorous approach than the earlier methods for climate
reconstruction, which is probably why the hockey stick / AGW
conclusion received a lot of endorsements from academic High Society
(including the American Statistical Association).

"The devil, as they say is in the details...."

Enjoy!

only production indeed : in clear frizzy, shaggy, gangly,

AFRICAN PROTEST HITS U.N CLIMATE TALKS IN LAST WEEK
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20091214/india_nm/india447011
COPENHAGEN (Reuters) – A protest by African nations accusing the rich
of doing too little to cut greenhouse gas emissions slowed U.N.
climate talks on Monday just four days before world leaders are due to
forge a deal in Copenhagen.

Why, most of those Negroes countries aka Poor Countries were rich
ones before control passed to the Negroes, through the Democrasseux
system ... and they are Poor Now ... and so will America since the
writing is on the wall indeed !
What the Negroes in control want is to be rich, since they still go as
in the past for what glitters. Once they get they money from begging &
threatening this will only stop at the top parasites levels and never
trickle down the line... The problem facing this World is the wooden
tongue which not only does allow to speak of glaring problems seen as
not political correct indeed.

It is a fact that issue of Negroes proliferation in Africa is going
to be considered in the most drastic way, ans this is going to be
through famines & lack of water both for drinking / irrigation.
Spending money on Negroes countries is just pushing the cork a bit
further since they are not Emerging or Developing but Hopelessly
Stagnating & Regressing tribes. China, Japan, Korea etc started their
development at that same point in time as Negroes Tribes, just see
where they are now ...going to be the leaders of the world since not
wasting their time with vain humanitarian ventures, of which
incidentally they own nothing ... the propensity of the humanitarian
cunts for charity is mostly centered on Negroes tribes which are so
grateful that in return they immediately engage in more mating,
rooting & breeding so as to show on the medias their half dying
descent ! So happy as well to buy guns & ammunitions with the
International aids so as to conducts more raping & murdering looting &
piracy !

In clear the message of Copenhaguen to the Negroes of the World,
should be STOP BREEDING LIKE RATS ! The Chinese who are a 1000 times
smarter than you are have issued the ONCE CHILD POLICY ... since you
are too dull & stupid to manage your countries which are all running
havoc, even when starting from perfection ( the Town of Johannesburg
after a few years of Negroes take over illustrates perfectly my
point) , you should consider that White countries are not able in the
coming world to bail you out of coming dramas TO WHICH THEMSELVES WILL
BE UNABLE TO FACE INDEED !

What you are not considering as well Mr Andrew Ravkin aka Belba Grubb,
are the official Academic science upon which you are basing your
conclusions. Indeed you are reasoning along the lines of accepted
dogmas which instill such ideas that some cyclic legerdemain will
bring us back to better time. This is indeed based on the fraudulent
Geology aka Gogology of now, and in one article of yours, which I
took the time to read, you are discussing the strength of met vortex
( Hurricanes, Tornadoes) which "Could" be linked to Global Warming.
Well, it is not directly but indirectly as the True Geology (which you
obviously ignore demonstrates) It works this way : Met Vortex are due
to De Coriolis forces, Global Warming accelerates the Drift of Earth
on Ecliptics resulting in increased De Coriolis Forces which in turn
boost the Met Vortex ! In ten years, Cyclones in Australia have
passed from max 300 km/h to 350 km/h and tornadoes in the US have
passed in the same time from 500 to 600 km/h !

I feel it to be completely ludicrous all those discussions in
Copenhagen WHICH WILL OPEN TO NOTHING AT ALL INVERSING THE TREND !
1) Negroes proliferation control in Africa & elsewhere ( Black
Plague)
2) Islam proliferation sustained by oil & bringing the nations into
which that disease spread to immediate economic poverty ( Green
Plague) . All the more when oil will be phased out very soon, just as
fresh water output from the veins of the Earth down below in the
Mantle ( True Geology ref) those poor Islamists will have nothing to
look forward since slavery trade, spices trade, harem style living
is only compatible with availability of water
3) The promoting of the True Geology in the world, so as to give all
responsible nations a hedge on preparation of survival skills once the
Global Warming bubble will have burst, and the Earth will find itself
away on the Ecliptics in much colder conditions that were it started.
Indeed we are heading towards Mars as much as when looking at Mars we
are looking at our older sister which was on our orbit a short
relative time ago

You poor French sod Le-Turd - the fairies at the bottom of your garden and
the HOT Aussie sun have warped you brain worse than anyone could imagine. Or
on the other hand has it just shrunk - you know just got smaller and smaller
until it's the size of a pin head in a big empty shell.

But all those veins still go in there all feeding that tiny little nodule
which tries to work so hard, but never quite gets there.

You pooer French demented sod !!!

There are a number of things you can do in order to get by with your
affliction.

Firstly you must realize that you have a problem in the first plasce.
Surely you must realize that you are a demented Nutter. If you don't
believe me, please take my word for it, you DEFINITELY are a NUTTER.

The second thing you must do is to minimize the amount of work you give that
poor little pin sized organ of yours. You must treat it with respect and
nurture it.

Don't nover load it. Forget all about that COSMIC BULLSHIT. It's all CRAP.

The third thing you must do is to stop confusing that small organ if yours
with conflicting information. Stop talking with poor old Horus and Titi.
They are with us no longer and no amount of talking to them will do you any
good.

Your worst enemy though are those nasty little fairies at the bottom of your
garden. You must avoid them at ALL costs. They are no good for your small
pin-head sized brain. They fill yoir brain with all sorts of demented CRAP.

The fourth thing you must do, Le-Turd, is to stay away from that cheap red
plonk you French Frogs grow over there. It is full of all sorts of
pollutants from the polluted soil and groundwater you poor Frogs have to
bear over there.

What you need is some good quality Australian wine - not cheap French plonk.
It will poison your brain even further. Remember Napoleon suffered the same
fate. He died from all the poisons which accumulated in his body.

The fifth thing you must do is to stop shoving that rubber hose up your
arse. If God had intended us to do that we would have all been born with
reubber hoses stuck up our arses. It is simply no good for you., Your poor
little arsehole has to cope with too much already. You shit out of it and
you also talk out of it, so it is overworked already.

And Le-Turd stop playing with it, remember it is at the arse end of your
world.

The sixth thing you must do is to stop WANKING. Remember you have been
inducted into the French hall of fame as France's GREATEST WANKER. Have you
heard anything from the city administrators of La Rochelle yet? I sent then
an email about nominating you as a famous person who has lived in La
Rochelle.

The seventh thing you must do is to come to trhe conclusion that you were
wrong all along and that you are not a famous geologist but you are just
some poor demented, deluded French Nutter.

Finally you must apologize and learn how to repent. You must get down on
your knees and bow your head. You must then place your head between your
knees and shove your head up your arse.

If you repent to the correct degree and shove your head up your arse far
enough, you will completely dissappear and your problems (and ours) will be
SOLVED.
