How to pronounce "Chicxulub"?

I've heard it pronounced as in "Chicks Lub". It means Devil's tail (or
another appendage of his, depending on which local you ask). It's an
anatomical reference to the map shape of a small spit of land off the
Yucatan peninsula, which happens to be near the ring structure.

My wife, who speaks Spanish, helped me with this. Mexican, and
especially Aztec-like pronounciation can be difficult, but we came up with:
Cheek Shoo Lube
or
Cheek Zhoo Lube
The 'x' threw us off when we were in Mexico.

My two cents worth.
I use to work with Gene Shoemaker (of Shoemaker/Levy fame. I know
Carolyn, Gene's wife discovered the comet, but I digress) and Dave
Roddy, an impact/explosion specialist. As I recall that they pronounced
it the same way as Phils' wife, Pee (I hope that's the proper way to
address you, please excuse me if I didn't use its proper form) came up
with. Pronounced--- Cheek shoe lube.

phonemes. There are over 30 extant Mayan languages, which can be further
divided into dialects. I grew up with the Pokomchi of San Cristobal, Alta
Verapaz. Fifteen miles away, in Coban, the people spoke Kekchi. These two
languages are so far apart as to be mutually unintelligible, futher
apart than say German and English. However, in Tac Tic and Santa Cruz,
different dialects of Pokomchi are spoken. The difference between these
dialects would be akin to the difference between low and high German. For

I believe that it is pronounced like

Chick-sa-lube. It is not Aztec, which is quite different, but Mayan. I'm
not sure which Mayan language it comes from, but in general, the accent
is on the final syllable, as in Chichén Itzá (which almost all Americans
mispronounce as CHEEchen EETsah [should be cheeCHEN eetSAH]). There is
also a question of how to pronounce the "i". It is probably a short I,
but this would depend on the language, so the correct pronounciation is
probably chick-shoo-LOOB. Also, note that you don't open your lips after
you close them when you pronounce the final "B" (it is an unaspirated
"B"). Of course if you want to be completely accurate, you need to note
exactly which kind of "c" sound to use. In the language I am familiar
with, Pokomchi, there are four distinct "c" sounds produced in a range
from the very front of the mouth to what is called a backed "k", which
is, in fact, usually pronounced by breathing backwards, it's so far back
in the throat. Since it is spelled with a "c" and not a "k", I suspect it
is pronounced like our "c".

It appears that my translation was wrong. Loosely translated,
it means "Tail of the beast".
I have also heard it Anglo-ized (or Hispanic-ized) to
"Tail of the devil").
