I'm sure there are lots more out there ---- from the foundational "Roy

For the Mohs Scale..."AWOL"...The general choice for anyone quick to consider

My Physical Geology instructor taught these:
"Apple Pie"
(Archeozoic, Proterozoic)
"Campbell's Ordinary Soup Does Make Peter Pale"
(Cambrian - Permian)
"Terrible Jungle Creatures Tiptoe Quietly"
(Triassic - Quaternary)

OK, I can't resist --
For the Geologic Time Scale:
"Can Orville See Down My Pants Pocket?. Tom Jones Can; Tom's Queer"
(Cambrian, Ordovician, etc ...)
I had Cornelis Klein (you know, of Hurlbut and Klein, "Manual of
Mineralology" - that bright green book everyone uses) for Mineralology
and he taught us the following phrase for Mohs' hardness scale:
"The girls can flirt and other queer things can do"
And I'm sure we had one for the formations at Field Camp, but I can't
seem to remember it.
From grade school, however, I do remember:
"Mary Visits Every Monday, Just Stays Until Noon Period"
for the planets - in order from the sun outward.

A good friend of mine came up with:
The green cow flew away, felt queer to come down.
Talc, gypsum, calcite, fluorite, apatite, feldspar, quartz, topaz,
corundum, diamond.
Are you out there Craig???

All nice stuff. I wish I had known these "tricks" back in college.
However, as a paleo major (before switching to Geology), I did learn the
phylogenetic chart by using the following:
Kings Play Chess On Fine Grain Sand
(Kingdom, Phylum, Class, etc.)
Then there's the one for the Grand Canyon's formations (I hope I have it
right):
Know The Canyon's History -- Study Rocks Made By Time
(Kaibab, Toroweap, Coconino, Hermit, etc.)

You're Never Too Old To Have A Happy Childhood
How about the old saw:
Come over some day, maybe play poker. Three jacks cover two queens.
(Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian...)
Or
Keep pr*v*tes clean or forget getting scr***d.
(Kingdom, phyllum, class...)
Sorry for the saltier mnemonic.
"Keep Pepsi Cola only for good students"
for kingdom, phylum etc.
