Yes it is a boundary. Using it as an example to illustrate Intrapacific
deformation is stupid.

I wasn't using it as an example of intraplate deformation.
I stated clearly that this was a boundary between the Pacific and
North American plate.

But you claim plates aren't moving. So, why is there motion
along the San Andreas?

It is an example of crustal deformation, a classic one at that. And I
remind you that the San Andreas fault is a transform fault running between
two ridge segments. The point is that not all transform faults occur at
plate boundaries. There are plenty of them within the plates themselves.
And the point I've been making (as well as Stuart) is that intraplate
deformation does occur not only within the Pacific, but in the other oceanic
plates as well, not to mention the deformation that occurs within the
continental plates. Just because they don't deform with the intensity that
occurs at the margins doesn't mean that deformation doesn't occur. What
Stuart and I have been trying to tell you is that even though the
deformation does occur, when compared to boundary conditions, you may as
well consider them to be rigid plates, and in fact, the models do just that.

When you assume that long-term, large displacements must significantly
deform the interiors of plates, you ignore the fact that the brittle crust
is riding on top of a hot viscous mantle. Unless you can give me a reason
why a hot viscous mantle in horizontal motion would significantly deform the
interior of cold hard brittle plates, you're clutching at straws. The
significant evidence for plate displacement is to be found at the
boundaries, not in the interiors of plates.

As the fractured crust moves across the less than spherical profile of
the rotating viscous interior it is incontrovertible that the adaption
of crust from one profile to another would occasion intraplate events
away from the boundaries.All this is dependent on rotational dynamics
and the inclusion of the Earth's spherical shape as a geological
player.

I have to remind myself that I am attempting to draw attention not
only to the fact that the Earth is rotating but that it is also
round,something that is not considered important to 'convectioneers'.

What strains are produced by EE is something Flo needs to think about.

Flo argues the lack of large scale deformation in plate interiors is
evidence
that plates do not move over long length scales. When he recognizes
that
the displacement plates do undergo is accomplished via *translation*
or
quasi-rigid body motion he will perhaps drop his argument.

You mean jigsaw pieces moving about and 'docking'? Nope, ...they
can't translate unless they take their boundaries with them - the two
of the three anyway (subduction and ridges), otherwise they're
growing. Or Shrinking (both concepts which Plate Tectonics uses, by
the way).

What *you* need to think about, are the implications that follow if
the ridges *do* move. Are you ready? (I doubt it..)

continent on the other side moves as well - i.e. that the 'far-side'

that prevents
ridges from migrating either.

No. This is where Plate Tectonics has to get real. We talk
absolutes. Using the concept of relative motion is a cop-out. When a
fault moves, one side literally moves up or down, or both move either
way to a degree. Accelerometers tell us. For *convenience* of
description (and to hide our ignorance) we can use the *concept* of
relative motion, but the *reality* doesn't work in relative terms, it
has to be faced (which is why we strew accelerometers around San
Francisco and other moving parts, is it not?).

When a crack appears in the wall of your house it stays in the same
place but gets bigger. It doesn't swim about like a fish, as you want
ridges to do, does it? Same with cracks in the crust - they don't

Of course we do. Once a crack, always a crack. Like the crack in
your house gets bigger, so do the ocean floors. But they *were* once
closed. Retrofitting the closure is easy for the Atlantic, Indian and
Pacific Oceans. It's also easy for the Pacific - once you see it.

What caused the crack? The Mountain belt that once went all around
the equatorial zone of Pangaea split with the extrusion of the mantle
and dilated. It's still dilating as the Mediterranean, Caspian and
Black Seas.

And what would cause the equatorial zone then to be a mountain belt?
Partly the change from a more oblate to a more spherical shape, and
the resistance to spherical correction. You can still see it in the
highest terrain on the Planet:-

...and partly the forcible extrusion of the mantle which caused the
circular shape of the initial position of the ridge, which is still in
evidence today in the continental lithosphere as the so-called
subduction zone, and its lid as the highest point in the elliptical

Get your head around that one, Stuart :- The subduction zone *IS* the
spreading ridge - its fossil position. It is where the spreading
ridge initiated. There are two elements to it, as we would expect of
a top-down rupture correcting to changing curvature - one in the
crust, and one in the mantle.

And spreading ridges -in absolute terms - migrate *away* from the
continents. All of them.

It's what it's all about - when it will be confirmed that the ridges
move *away* from the continents (in absolute terms). It's the only
explanation why the entire ocean floors are locked as one away from
the ridges and why there are virtually no earthquakes in it, although
it's riddled with fractures.. Innit.

Um no, you see real upwellings from the deep mantle occur in the
form of plumes with nice big plume heads, and when they reach the
surface
they create flood basalts, plateaus and nice big swells that last a
long
time. As the plate moves over it, one gets an elongate structure.

And what you call "wedge" is now what geologists refer to as the
"wedge".
If you are trying to make yourself not understood, you are doing a
fine job.

That's what happens in the real earth. In the real Earth kimberlites
come from the
upper mantle, hotspots bring material up from the lower mantle. They
do not bring
up Andesites like your "eduction" nonsense.

indicate an increase in ocean volume or decrease in trace element
percentage with time? The volume of water has stayed the same.
The fact is that trace element analyses have shown that
there has been a progressive enrichment that is consistent
with a constant radius Earth and recycling through both crust and
mantle. Had water volume increased with time trace markers
would have been more concentrated in the past and show
dilution today.

granitic crust was not under. It did not exist. Granitic rocks formed
and got emplaced gradually as the surface of Earth expanded.

There is no spike in the geologic record indicating an infusion
of trace elements or a dilution caused by new ocean water . Nor
are there indications of primarily deep water deposits that would
indicate water volume has changed over time . Since we know the

Again , you have an insufficient understanding . Differentiation of
mafic crust and its evolution into granite requires heat and pressure
to melt that mafic crust . If the planet is expanding it is releasing
the required heat before it can melt .

The fact is that crustal collisions in the Archaen piled up mafics
until
they were thick enough that the pressure of the overburden melted
these rocks
and the first granites formed by differentiation .

We're not talking about *how* you tell. We're talking about *what
actually happens*. Of course it's difficult to tell in the instant
(unless as you say, you're there) but not over geological time. The
best way to tell is the geological record. If a fault moves down then
you get a watery incursion; if it moves up then you get erosional
detritus - flysch and talus aprons and so on, uplifted flats become
Plateaus, ..raised platforms - like these:-

That will become apparent when one half falls down. According to the

The circumglobal "Mountain belt" was once the ambital zone of the
planet, which was once in 'flat' equilibrium (flat strata) - more
oblate than the equatorial zone is now (as the planet is slowing,
getting more spherical). It split down the middle, from Iran/
Afghanistan/ Tarim Basin/ to China to the Western Americas (a remnant
marginal zone is the Basin-and-Range). It split because of that
fundamental oblate equatorial instability as the planet got more
spherical (larger) (/slower) - it split down the middle of the
oblateness.

The getting bigger. And the recession of the seas to the ocean basins
(the mantle split). And the consequent change in the level of
erosional equilibrium (level of zero erosional potential.) Eroding
this high plateau caused the 'mountain' belt. Like the margins of the

Well it probably did. The extrusion of the mantle is a great big
domal split, the remnant of which is still with us as the Roof of the
World (on the continents). The Pacific (another great big domal
intrusion/ extrusion (which is the same one) is the mantle
equivalent.

Your "one spot" being the Pacific Ridge. ... This is why I
speculate to some extent on Moon capture and the shift in the
barycentre.- and that the Earth is in a state of slow explosion (but
that is high speculation). But I wouldn't be surprised if there are
geochemical differences in the time slices of the ocean floors
reflecting this. I also wouldn't be surprised if nobody has yet
bothered to look.

No secret mechanism. It says that the planet when it was smaller was
likely spinning faster and more oblate. I don't think it is in
question that the planet was once spinning faster. Whether spinning
faster means smaller is a moot point.

No, I mean rheology, which is the study of the flow of matter,
although it can
be extended to solids. Rheology also colloquially refers to the
relationship
between stress and strain for a given substance.

For example Google elastic-perfectly plastic rheology.

we know is that they are weakly interacting with ordinary matter aside
from gravity, and can
be studied through their gravitational effects. Matter and energy that
are weakly interacting
are not logical candidates for spontaneously generating ordinary
matter.

Using Scotese's animation it would be just as easy to draw the radius

subducted.

It is also possible with a radius large enough to have the Earth any
shape one wants, too, and all those assumptions are as completely
unnecessary, since it can be demonstrated all the age of the ocean
floor is accounted for by just enlarging the radius.

mass of the dark matter halo is. We can then independently test that

To be precise, we know something has mass that causes the lensing, but
what it is, is hypothetical, and giving it a name does nothing to make
any more known.

Overthrusting is a standard geologic term. upduction and eduction are
not found in any geological dictionary I'm aware of.

Indeed. The earthquake mechanisms on transform faults show the
opposite motion from what you'd expect based on the offset of the
ridges. The offset for example, may be right lateral, but in actuality
it is left lateral motion. Thats why it is a different class of fault.

Not by symetric insertion of mantle material at ridges my dear. Holmes
ignored the existence of ridges.

The fact is that Carey presented the mechanism of ridge spreading
before the "new global tectonics" half revolution.

I have my own opinion on plumes: none of the two parties are correct.
Simply because Earth's tectonics is not driven by heat transfer but by
pressure release. Materials follow pressure gradient, not heat gradient.
Of course, heat is transported in the process, but that is not the
engine.

When it comes to Plate Tectonics, everything is different from "what
you'd expect". That's what makes it so stupid.

Stuart, ..we don't want to know if you know the rote answer trundled
out for first year students. We want to know how a guy in your
position (and there are thousands of you heading up universities all
over) rationalise that stupid nonsense. The animations are quite
specific: the offset occurs *before* transform faulting begins, ..and
transform faults offset nothing despite moving for hundreds of
millions of years.

Therefore it's not transform faults that are doing the offsetting. So
what is? We're not interested in so-called faults that do nothing,
whether they have a whole new class to their name or not. We're
interested in what causes the offset in the first place.

No, but there's a reason they rarely publish (if at all) in well known
scientific journals. Nor is my job to be up to speed on such
terminology. You continually use terms that seem to be ill-defined or
not defined in well known references.

Most people ignore them, cuz I haven't com across them in the
professional literature. At any rate I don't have time to traverse
literature off the beaten path to figure out non-standard jargon.

If you want to use eduction, upduction or whatever, then define them
and give instances as to what they refer too.

I'm on about your inability to explain how the offset on spreading
ridges happens, when those animations clearly show (and state) that
the offset is there *before* transform faulting begins, and that the
ridge offsets are unaffected by subsequent movement on the faults.
