Researchers say there is a one in six chance of a magnitude 7 event in the
next century.

The world is “woefully underprepared” for a gigantic volcanic eruption
which could end civilisation and could cause climate change says Dr Lara
Mani, of Cambridge University.

Dr Mani said: "Such gigantic eruptions have caused abrupt climate change
and collapse of civilisations in the distant past.

“Hundreds of millions of dollars are pumped into asteroid threats every
year, yet there is a severe lack of global financing and co-ordination for
volcano preparedness.

“This urgently needs to change. We are completely underestimating the risk
to our societies that volcanoes pose.”

The effect of a magnitude 7 event would be similar to a 1km-wide asteroid
blasting the Earth, however the event of an eruption of a volcano stands
to be much more likely than an astroid hitting the Earth.

Not only would an eruption cause a massive haemorrhage to the economy,
costing an amount that would be in the trillions, but the fatality rate
would be as lethal as the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dr Mani further added that: "The Tonga eruption was the volcanic
equivalent of an asteroid just missing the Earth and needs to be treated
as a wake-up call.

“Volcanologists have been calling for a dedicated volcano-monitoring
satellite for over 20 years. The current underinvestment is simply
reckless.”

This news came after one of the most active volcanos in Japan erupted
which caused the evacuation of hundreds of residents in the Japanese
island of Kyushu.

The world is woefully unprepared for any number of mega disasters:
supervolcanos, earthquakes above 9.0 on which ever scale you want,
asteroid impacts, artifical bacterium with a taste for petro chemicals,
the batgirl movie.
