question about tile server

I am looking for a geo tile server that is public accessible. What I
was hoping to do is something like the following:

http://www.tileserver.org/x/y/z ....

And have it return a GIF image that is positioned at X & Y with
altitude Z.

Any advice/help is much appreciated.
