Really REAL 3D Mandelbrot - NOT Extruded

Is it really possible to compute a REAL 3D Mandelbrot? I've heard when
rendered it's in the shape of an 'apple' with arms or tentacles growing
off of it - I've been told this fractal was given it's own name, and that
it's not called a "3D Mandelbrot".

Any info would be appreciated, with feedback via this Newsgroup & E-Mail.
