2006/08/16: BBC: Howard rejects emissions targets
The Australian Prime Minister John Howard has hit out
at a plan backed by state leaders to introduce caps on
greenhouse gas emissions. State leaders have drafted a
"cap and trade" plan which sets emissions targets for
three polluting gases. The plan would introduce fines
for companies exceeding targets but allow low polluters
to trade emissions credits for money. Mr Howard said
the plan would harm the economy and lead to higher fuel prices.

It is amusing that the Greenhouse Industry is peddling this total
fabrication of gw extinction though.

Since most evolution is on the order of tens of thousands of years,
most species have been through a number of glacial/stadial cycles.

Species which were highly sensitive to climate were selected out
of the gene pool long ago.

Extinction is a normal process and usually depends on the change in
environment as it always has. Hell, they will create something in a beaker
before too long. They already think that life probably exists on some moons
scattered throuout the solar syatem and know there are the basic amino acids
existing in comets. Even Antarctica has been found to have life locked up in
the ice.

Mass extinctions have happened in the past. Why will there be no more in
the future?

Yes. Double CO2 will cause this much warming. How do we stop burning
fossil fuels soon and only double CO2? That would take a very aggressive
reduction, starting fairly soon. Do you think that this is very likely?

Burning all or most of the fossil fuels seems just as likely, if not more
so. That would take CO2 up to about eight times preindustrial levels. That
would warm things up by close to 10 C, if we ignore the methane hydrates.
It is hard to see how the methane hydrates would be ignorable, in this
case.

Yes, but some of these climate swings do seem to have caused mass
extinctions. For example, at 55 MYA, probably caused by a methane hydrate
event.

> Somehow life still hangs on.

Many species didn't. That is what a mass extinction is. Species that
survive a mass extinction are often small. Think about what that means.
