"There's a lot of money at stake here"

25 Nov 2009

One of North Queensland's top marine physicists has accused fellow
scientists of exaggerating the threat that climate change poses to the Great
Barrier Reef.

James Cook University's Prof Peter Ridd said global warming could actually
be good for the Reef.

And he accused scientists of "pushing particular lines" in a bid to save
their jobs and keep their funding flowing.

"There's a lot of money at stake here," Prof Ridd said....

"There's large organisations in science who are pushing particular lines and
... the other side of the argument is not being heard."

"It is a remarkable fact that despite the worldwide expenditure of perhaps
US$50 billion since 1990, and the efforts of tens of thousands of scientists
worldwide, no human climate signal has yet been detected that is distinct
from natural variation."

In the 1960s there was a scare about the Great Barrier Reef that it
would be dead in 10 years because of (a) Pollution and (b) the Crown
of Thorns. (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crown-of-Thorns_Starfish).
The 'science' only took into account the sudden developement of the
sport of SCUBA diving and the observations of the divers.
In the 80s they tried the 'sun bleaching' claim that was going to be
the end of the Great Barrier Reef.
Now its Global Warming.
One day they're going to get it right....
