After being postponed several years (2004, then 2006, then February 2009),
it's finally here. Everyone ready for the riots that may happen in the
inner cities? ;-)

As of 8 am Friday, the only Syracuse, NY station still transmitting
anything using analog is WTVH, channel 5. Most likely, the only reason
WTVH is still up is that they are now managed by the staff of WSTM,
which is involved in other things right now. WSTM, virtual channel 3,
isn't transmitting in analog OR digital, as they get equipment to switch
the digital signal to RF channel 24.

No riots yet...

No riots, yet. But, I've been getting some good 500 mile low VHF skip
today. But only because the stations are still transmitting analog.
Maybe tommorow I'll riot. When nobody's around.

Hardware glitches have delayed the WSTM switch, and they've turned
analog back on so they're transmitting the Stanley Cup game. It will be
turned off by midnight. WSTM digital won't be up on the final channel
until Sunday morning. They're trying to get the WSTM digital signal in
SD on WTVH's 5.2 subchannel, but don't know at this point if that will
work. WTVH analog is now off the air.

I may riot myself if they don't get this settled soon. This is what
happens when the Liberal Media run things. Sigh. ;^)

LOL...sounds like SOMEONE waited for the very last minute.

Did the Nielsen poll include them in the 3 million not ready yet?

SOMEONE hasn't been paying attention. They had no choice.

As I explained before, WSTM's permanent digital home is on channel 24 -
which they couldn't use until WCNY shut off its analog signal and got
out of the way. While some components to change from digital
broadcasting on channel 54 to 24 could be installed ahead of time,
actual testing and troubleshooting had to wait until today. Contrary to
what you seem to believe, broadcasters do not have unlimited funds so
that they can have multiple transmitters in operation, so the single
digital transmitter this station has to work with had to be shut down
while the testing and troubleshooting occurs.

If I got the story right from my transmitter engineer last night, WSTM
needs some parts to get their digital rig on the air. Our station (in
Buffalo) is loaning Thales what they need to get them going.

I'm not nearly as impatient about this as I sounded in the above post. I
happen to be a farmer who has an engineering background. Believe me, if
anybody knows that "stuff" happens, it's me.

WSTM now up and running, coming in perfectly. Did some rescans and came
up with something new...

In one room, on the first floor, using a simple bowtie UHF antenna at
about head-height, tonight I'm picking up WUHF, the FOX affiliate from
Rochester. I'm estimating that the transmitter is about 80 miles from my
house, and there's a 300 ft. hill two miles away in that direction. None
of the "official" websites say I have a prayer of pulling in this
station. Yet still WUHF is coming in rock-steady and crystal-clear. The
digital channel is 28. I don't remember ever seeing anything on its old
analog channel, 31.

Should be interesting to see what happens tomorrow when the sun comes up.
