WARNING: SPIE or Society of Photographic Instrumentation Engineers books
can be of
limited use to millwrights, I would suggest getting on the Internet and
getting more
details on their books. Many are so theoretical as to be almost useless
to millwrights.
On the other hand some are loaded with very valuable info.

SCARCE MASSACHUSETTS SURVEY
TRIGONOMETRICAL SURVEY OF MASSACHUSETTS, Tables of Bearings, Distances,
Latitudes, Longitudes,&c. ascertained by the Astronomical and
Trigonometrical Survey of Massachusetts, (Boston, 1846),
7.0" x 10.8", 73 pages with one folding plate titled "Plan of the
Principle Triangles of the Trigonometrical
Survey of Massachusetts." The work consists of a 22 page introduction and
history of the survey plus tables giving positions of numerous
trigonometrical stations. The field work and mapping were conducted
between 1831 and 1844, principally under the direction of the noted
scientist, Simeon Borden. Some of Borden's devices and methods were later
adopted into practice by the U.S. Coast Survey. Discrepancies with the
state's inaccurate town surveys were noted and corrections made. A rare
copy of the results of
this important survey. Paperback with cracking of hinges and edges of
binding; plate has folding creases
but no tears. $175
JOHN LOVE
Love published his first edition of Geodaesia in London in 1688 after he
returned from surveying in America. Love was particularly concerned about
the lack of knowledge exhibited by young surveyors in Carolina. Later
editions of the book appeared until the end of the 18th century, with the
12th (1786) and 13th editions being published in New York. The work
changed little over the years, even considering the later revisions of
Samuel Clark. Instructions are given in use of a Gunter chain and
measuring angles with the circumferentor, plane table, and semicircle.
There are also directions for taking field notes and measuring and
calculating the acreage for plots of land. George Washington (1732-1799)
studied surveying from Love's Geodaesia, which was widely used in
colonial America.
LOVE, JOHN, Geodaesia: or, The Art of Surveying and Measuring of Land
Made Easy. . . As also How to Lay out New Lands in America, or
Elsewhere....", (London, 1731) 196 pages of text with many woodcut
figures, some full-page, and 64 pages of tables; an outer leather jacket
is marked with impressed lines and initials and is secured by cord inside
the front and rear covers leading the the presumption that the original
cover is damaged and possibly with split hinges; no end-papers, title
page is missing perhaps 1/4" to 1/2" around outside perimeter, the page
following shows less damage and the remainder of the pages appear
complete although browned. The last page of the appendix is missing. A
rare edition of one of a historic surveying text designed to better the
practice of surveying in the new land called America. $300
ROBERT GIBSON
During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Gibson's Surveying was the
American standard against which other works were compared. The earlier
editions of 1739, 1752, and 1768 were published in Dublin. The first
American edition was published in 1785 in Philadelphia. Gibson describes
use of the circumferentor (compass), theodolite, semicircle, and plane
table. He also describes and gives examples for the taking of field notes
and the calculation of area. In the 1800's different versions of Gibson
were
published by Americans. Most of these editions were by either James Ryan
or John D. Craig.
GIBSON, Robert A, A Treatise of Practical Surveying; Which is
demonstrated From its First Principles. Wherein Every Thing that is
Useful and Curious in that Art is fully considered and explalined. 8th
ed., (New York, 1798), 5.2" x 8.2", this is the first New York edition of
Gibson's work and has been adapted to American surveying. It contains 296
pages of text, 156 pages of tables, plus 13 folding plates. The plates
are in uncommonly good condition although they show some outer edge
curling and scuffing damage; the book is rebound in modern marbled board
covers with bright red leather (possibly imitation) spine; despite some
light foxing to the pages this rebound copy is in uncomomonly nice
condition for a rare American 18th century Gibson. $150
BK-12: GIBSON, Robert, A Treatise on Practical Surveying: Which is
Demonstrated from its First Principles, Revised, Corrected and Adapted to
the Use of Schools, American Surveyors, & c. by John D. Craig,
(Baltimore, 1818) 5.5" x 8.7", 326 pages of text plus 152 pages of
tables; diagrams are contained within the text, thus no folded plates;

Jess' Surveying first appeared in 1799. The second and final edition was
published in 1814. As instructive texts, Jess' books are not quite as
good as Gibson's, but superior to Flint's. Books by Jess are hard to find
and command higher prices than others of the period.
JESS, Zachariah, A Compendious System of Practical Surveying, and
Dividing of Land, 2nd ed.,(Philadelphia, 1814), 5.1" x 8.5", 227 pages of
text plus 154 pages of tables; divided into 31 sections including the
usual geometry and trigonometry, plus sections on taking angles, compass,
inaccessible boundary, division of land, offsets, enlarging maps,
surveying with the chain only, etc.; original leather binding with
scuffing to edges and hinges; front and rear blank endpapers torn, name

ABEL FLINT
Editions of Flint's Survey were published for a half century beginning in
1804. It was a widely used text and reference book. A testimonial by two
noted early surveyors states: "The Surveyor who shall own this will not
be under the necessity of purchasing Gibson which is a more expensive
work." Abraham Lincoln reportedly studied from texts by Gibson and Flint.

8.0", hinges show separation, otherwise good. $55
CHARLES DAVIES
Davies' Surveying was written for the Military Academy. It became the
most popular school text and professional handbook during the mid-19th
century. The U.S. General Land Office extracted information from Davies'
text directly into its 1855 Manual of Surveying Instructions. The book
was first published in 1830. There are six versions of the book with
changing titles. These different versions appeared in 1830, 1835, 1841,
1851, 1870, and 1883. There were several intervening reprints.

JOHN GUMMERE
Gummere's Surveying first appeared in 1814, and Karpinsky (1940) reports
there were editions as late as 1917. John Gummere was a teacher, and
particularly adapted his treatise to the use of schools. The book also
met certain working needs of professional surveyors. According to his
1814 preface, Gummere thought Gibson and Jess were his major competitors.
He completely ignored Flint, who likely sold many more books than Jess.
