Hello All,

My collegue is using MSC.Marc 2001 to analyze orthotropic material. He
has E11, E22, v12 and v21 and G. Apparently MSC.Marc only accepts v12
and assumes v21 is equal to v12.

I have spoken to several engineers about this and they say that v12 is
always equal to v21, and this applies to most CAE softwares.

My question is : for orthotropic material, is v12 always equal to v21.
If it is not, doesn anyone know how to input this into MSC.Marc
because it willl only accept v12.

Thank you in advance.
best regards,

As far as I see it, the poisson ratio says something about deformation
in one direction if you squeeze in the other direction. Let's assume a
cube in an isotropic material. If you apply an axial stress in the
11-direction, the cube will deform in the 22 direction (and the
magnitude results from your poisson ratio). And because the material
is isotropic the same magnitude will appear in the 11-direction if you
apply the same stress in the 22-direction. Hence, the stiffness tensor
becomes symmetric, and v12 = v21.

Now, if the material properties are different in the two directions
(i.e. the material is orthotropic) I would say, that the apparent
poisson ratios that combine the two directions are not equal. Because
the stress-strain relationship is different in the two directions. But
this is only based on intuition. But be careful!

About MSC.Marc ... sorry, havent heard of it.

Correct relation is:

v12 / v21 = E1 / E2

This will be the way it is implemented in Marc

Thank you sir. I found the answer in the Marc theory manual to be
exactly as described.
