I am curious about why the tensile strength is mainly specifed for the
requirement of mechanical strength rather than such as yield strength.

I think it is because for metals and other materials, the "tensile
strength" is the shortened name for the "ultimate tensile strength", or
the "ultimate tensile stress".

Just to add to this:

It is sometimes permissible for a design to accept local yielding during in
field use; however, any load beyond tensile (ultimate tensile stress) would
result in failure.
